I seen the word homeless mentioned on here. Dad referred to some of them as hobo's, tramps and vagabonds. My Uncle Charlie Martin was a hobo in his own words. He loved traveling and doing things when he wanted. He was my Grandma Sells brother. So when he hit the Kansas City area he would take a couple of weeks or months in the area. Dad always had something for him to do and he would stay with us or Grandpa would put him up with small jobs to do. He could do almost anything you asked him to do. He never took hand outs with doing a small job. It has been many years since I last saw him and would guess he has gone on to a more peaceful home. Oh, he was married at one time but I guess married life didn't suit him.
But, I too see people on the corners with their little signs asking for help. In fact one lady made the news when she asked a reporter for a small donation to feed her children. He got suspicious and tailed her to find out she lived in a well to do neighborhood and had a husband that had a job. She finally admitted this was how she got money to spend on the kids even though they didn't need it.
I guess I'm not good as I offer to take them to the local mission to get clean clothes, a bath, some food and a place for a good nights sleep. But, most turn down the offer. Shawnee police used to arrest them and lock them up so they could get warm in the winter and a bite of food.

Many from years gone by and some more recent.
Many Vets commit suicide. 6,000 of them every year.
