     Ryan passed his private pilot check ride today. Sure glad that's behind me. I probably worked as hard instructing him. All in all it was a good refresher for me . I'm a kind of at a loss for words at how to put this. Since Ryan was very young he always hung out with me. So when he took up flying C/L stunt I was thrilled. The hours spent in the workshop and at the  flying field have been priceless . I have thought many times " what have I done to deserve this". Well I don't know but I'll take it. It's not winning the Nat's and world champs ,It's mostly the time spent together that I know most grandpas don't get. As I enter my 71st year I can play these great times over and over and they always bring a smile to my face.
       Now  we will start on his instrument rating. On top of that it looks good for going to the nat's. Now with all the bad stuff going on in the world there is some good stuff too.   Bill Rutherford

I know how Ryan felt when he passed the checkride. I was on top of the world. I wore an old t-shirt that day because I knew I was going to have the tail cut off. Now, when someone asks what the old ragged shirt is in the frame, I tell them they would have to experience it to understand. Good luck to him on going for the instrument ticket. He will also feel just as good about that.

Bill, congrats to both of you. I know what your talking about, time spent with your grandchildren. Priceless. My daughter and grandson worked with me for two years when I was building houses, lots of memories to relive when setting in the easy chair out front on the porch. I too have memories of your grandson and you at the Nat. that too is priceless. Looking forward to being with you two agin at the Nat. Tell Ryan hello for me and keep up the good work. Congrats to Ryan and you. That Private check ride is always remembered not for it's difficulty, but for getting through the unknown experience.

I always told my students that the Private license is a license to learn.

I've always considered be biggest single accomplishment to be getting the Instrument rating. Even the Instructor's rating was easy in comparison.

Soloing out new pilots is risky bidness for the IP these days.

If the thing goes badly, a ton of hurt comes down on the IP.  I don't know who (other than the military) would have the nerve to be a flight instructor today.

Congrats Ryan!!!! I remember my checkride vividly which was almost a year ago.

Flying on instruments is a lot of fun too! Enjoy your time with your grandpa, sounds like you got a great instructor for both CL and the full size cousins!

Congrats to Ryan and absolutely get to work on the instrument rating. I recall my dad (a WWII Army pilot) hounding me to get it done. He refused to ride with me till I had it. All I can remember about my checkride (near 40 years ago) was that I forgot the name "terminal control area" and could only sputter "the upside down wedding cake." He let it slide. I remember first solo much more vividly, thinking "Wow, this plane climbs so much better with only me in it!" I sure hope we can continue to fly private planes for a long time into the future, which is by no means a sure thing. Enjoy it while you can! Go Ryan!!

You got that right, Tom.  It wasn't just the two hour check ride, it was also that bloody 6 hour written!!

You got that right! Even Thermodynamics  tests were easier. The only thing is that I have completely forgotten what I "learned" in Thermo!

No more "written s," All multiple choice on a computer...you get to know immediately if you passed or not. It still requires a lot of study, but seems easier to test. My IA test took almost seven hours (1989)...consisting of written, open response answers. I was like a "wet dish rag" after finishing that test.
