CBS EVENING NEWS

Well, seems as if some moron crashed a quad copter on the Golden Gate Bridge and now some California authorities have their panties in a wad about passing laws against flying these things.  We need rules and regulations on these things they are saying.  Somebody is gonna get hurt or cause an accident they are saying. They are asking Dianne Feinstein to do something. I am not even going to comment on how stupid things are going to get if she gets involved.

CBS jumped on this story in prime time on the evening news.   Keep on pushing these things AMA....GO AHEAD....

So could you detail how the drone was being flown in compliance with the AMA safety code?

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

They should just put up some 2.4ghz noise generators. If you crank out enough power, you can still jam spread spectrum I think.

Radar aimed tennis ball air cannons would be fun too. You could aim at the quad or the operator (more fun).

Typical... They all cry for more laws, when the laws already exist.

Well the media don't know about laws or even how to read the.   Besides they report what supposed to be a danger at times.  No report of the father walking his dog shot and robbed by three young teen age thugs.  Left to die with his pup trying to revive him when found.

Whenever the news people try reporting on planes, they confuse everything, trying to see what happened in the narrow scope of their poor understanding of how things work. While the houses of most state governments are beneath contempt IMNSHO, Ms. Feinstein may have a better conception of law making than her cohorts there. One can only hope.

This is a woman who does not even know which end of the barrel a .223 round exits an AR15 rifle but wants to ban them.  She will apply the same logic to any model that flies, never giving a thought to the idiot who is flying the thing.  In her mind, they are just like guns so they are all bad and we must get rid of them.   This will NOT stop with these quad copters....it never does.   There are some good legitimate commercial uses for these things but flying one through a windshield of a truck on the GG Bridge is not one of them.  Whenever you get ANY of these brain dead legislators involved in something like this, you are just asking for trouble.  The next thing you know, Obama will be making a statement about them on national TV.

Good thing tethered aircraft are exempt.  ;) But I get what you are saying, why stop with quads why not legislate all RC aircraft, this could get real bad, let's hope cooler heads prevail.

For 13+ years I worked as a news person in a CBS affiliate radio station.  I was absolutely dumbfounded when I discovered that nearly all the CBS personal were really not well educated in regards to anything other than presentation.  In interviewing political types, both State and Federal it was even worse with one exception, Senator Slade Gorton, who in my experience with him, showed remarkable savvy in a vast amount of situations. I have no positive feelings that either the press or the people in any government will be able to come up with anything but negative results concerning the 'drone" problem.

Maybe it is time to out law cars as sometimes they kill people.  I often wonder why we have laws that are not enforced.   Here in my area people pass me like I'm standing still and I'm usually close to 5mph over speed limit.  When I was on crossing duty at a school an officer I flew RC with had his radar gun out.  He stopped one of the mothers who was running late.  I asked him why her when others were over the speed limit.  His answer: "She 7 mph over the limit, any less and the judge will throw it out".   But I guess politician can make all kinds of laws in stead of enforcing the ones we have. By now there are more of these ready-to-play toys in the air than the whole historic fleet of genuine model airplanes.

Of course the people who play with them have never heard of AMA and any stinkin' safety code.

We need to distance ourselves from this entire issue.  Unfortunately, the Tower Hobby catalog is now about 70% quadrichopper.  The current offering have.

Built in cameras.
GPS.
I Pod control.
Automatic return-to-pilot
No actual flight controls, just point the direction.

No irony at all, just intrusive software that "reads" everything that you read looking for keywords that match their advertisers interests.
