What do you guys think of hobby king heat shrink covering I am thinking of buying some
-
They have a transparent version that works well and holds up very nice. It's not very pliable while applying, so convex curves are tough around fuse spines, but not terrible. It shrinks kinda fast, so you'd just wanna work quick. My friend George Hostler has had good luck with the solid colors. He's covered 3 planes that I can think of.
-
It is the best out there. One of Samantha planes that she has had for four years and gallons of fuel has never had it loose or a edge come up. Hobby parts is the same stuff but half as much on a roll. Steve

It is great. I've used it for a few years now. The solid colours go on nice and stay stuck! The transparent colours are a little more prone to peeling with fuel and oil so some sealing maybe needed.

Brodak's covering is a very low temperature material. Overheating it, using normal Monokote temps, gives a lot of grief.

I really hesitated posting this because of the previous posts. I have been using shrink covering for several years now trying to get away from using dope. The Hobby King covering I bought would not shrink evenly and I finally just gave up on it and trashed it and went back to Ultracote. Allen Brickhaus got me to using Ultracote years ago and I have never found anything any better and I have tried most all of the brands including Hobby Kings. Maybe I just got a bad several rolls but I could not get it to apply correctly either with an iron or a gun. Evidently I was doing something wrong since others on here seem to love the stuff but I will stick with Ultracote until something better comes along.

Brodak, Econo Kote, Hobby King all were too hard to use (FOR ME) ...
Ultracote also gets my vote.... worth the extra bucks
That said, I have good luck with regular MonoKote and some of the Century 21 stuff
BUT !!!
I hasten to add that Dane Martin does a LOT of film covering, and if he recommends the HK transparent...with cautions... it is worth considering

I can understand the comment of the transparent not being fuel proof if the fuel gets under the seams. I trim the seams with ultracote also. Here's two examples of the HK transparent. Kristina's ringmaster and daviny's little RC park flyer. The ringmaster was the one I flew the most last year in the fly-a-thon. It's got many many flights, at least 100. No pealing or loosening. The other one is electric, just came out nice.

Those members of my club who have used Hobby King's coverings have had very good things to say about it! I have way too much "Old Mono Coat" to worry about buying more stuff! However I have used Ultra coat on occasion and have had positive results with it. It went around curves quite nicely!

Inexpensive and work's great for me. I did get one roll that was very hard to get the backing peeled off. Maybe there is some quality variation due to the price?
-
Oh, and what Russell said. The backing on the transparent was not fun to get off!

Are the covering hinges in the old fabric style nicely functional?
Thanks,

Well my opinion is yes. They are awesome. I did this little video a while ago. It's not like some definitive thing. I have some pics also for some questions that weren't answered in the video. Maybe I'll go back and post some stills. But anyway, I find them to be very free and very long lasting.

Thank you, Dane.
I'll look at the video when I get to a better internet connection.
I think that this is the way I will do the elevator on my .15 Magician.
One tip I have for you, you might, and I will, incorporate to mine, is to round the corners of the ironed on hinges. I learned a long time ago that sharp pointy edges peel up more easily than rounded corners and straight edges....So, that's what I'll do on mine.
I might see if they have "Clear" covering, and if so, I might try that out, or just use the same color as the base coat.
Thanks for the come back and link to the other thread.

will this go over foam? Or is the temperature too high?

I use econokote over foam. Much lower temp. And sometimes a spray adhesive. The light stuff.

Target,
The clear is very cool to use. Here's an old dynaflight butterfly.
