Gene Schaffer Memorial contest
« on: September 06, 2021, 12:06:01 PM »
I just wanted to take a moment to thank the New York Control Line Stunt Team (NYCLST) for an outstanding contest this past Saturday at the legendary Flushing Meadow Park field. Special thanks go out to Joe and Margaret Daly and the "Daly Boys," Joseph, Steven, Alex, and Markus, and also Jose and Attina Modesto, and Will and Jeannie DeMauro. The contest site was incredibly well prepared and the contest ran smoothly. For those of you who have never run a contest or CD'd one, this is not by accident or luck. Every detail has to be anticipated and every contingency expected. There was an unforeseen hitch at the end of the contest, and one over which Joe and his crew had no control. But, the end result was a great ending to a great day.

An extra special thanks to Jose and Attina for the great food! Hey, man; BBQ spare ribs and BBQ chicken along with all the fixings all for free!

One of the highlights of the day was having our recently departed brother, Vic Macaluso's grandsons, Chris and Stephen, in attendance. Vic's immaculate F-14 Tomcat II was also there, having been purchased recently by Andrew Jaworski (who, by the way is a very engaged and intense up and coming Stunt flier who won his first Intermediate contest on Saturday!). Joe Daly flew a memorial flight with the Tomcat at the lunch break, and received a huge applause upon his perfect landing. Another great memory to keep from this legendary field and add to the hundreds of other great memories from more than 50 years of flying there. I could feel the presence of Gene, Vic, Bob Lampione, Billy Simons, Big Jim Greenaway, Freddy Miles, Hank Forbes, Ray Moore and many others who have now passed, but who made that field a very special place.

If you live on the East Coast and missed this one, you missed a good one. Please try and make it a priority next year!

On the West coast, here is Gene Schaffer's Stunt Machine. 51oz,  Bob Hunts wing, Randy's special  OS 35s engine and CF tank. Have not flown it yet.

Bob,

It was truly a great event with many great memories that will be cherished for a life-time. Surely it was one of those events that made everything feel like nothing else mattered other than remembering our old-friends that are no longer with us yet inspired so many great times and moments. I still can't believe how incredible it felt to fly at Flushing Meadows field after having seen so many videos over the years and having heard the stories. It was a childhood dream that became reality and I can't thank everyone enough for making it happen.

Thanks again for the kind words. Really looking forward to attending many more events going forward and hanging out with everyone in the near future.

Until then. Stay well!

Bob and Andrew,
Thanks for the kind words! There is just something about the Flushing contests that is magical! We have been holding this contest for 5 years now and each time it is special. There always seems to be a twinkle in everyone’s eyes who comes to Flushing to compete or just spectate. It really is a field of dreams!

Thanks
Joe
