Looking for someone with a 3D printer
« on: March 08, 2025, 12:25:07 PM »
I am wondering if there is someone here who has a 3D printer who might be able to make for me a dummy P&W Wasp radial engine which I plan to use in a scale airplane.   I can purchase STL files to do this but have no equipment or knowledge of the process.   One or two are all I plan to make at this point.   The scale will be about 5" or a little larger diameter.

Hi Mike.   Maybe they might make it for me from the files I send them.   I do think a few here have a printer and might be able to do this.   That's what I'm hoping.   If not I'll look for some commercial outfit.   The plans I already have drawn but can't find much the right size .   I have a molded plastic unit that might work but it's size is a bit off and it doesn't look really realistic.    The one I can get the files to for printing looks like the real full size R1340.   Thats the one I'd like to use if I'm going to invest the time in the airplane ( Curtis F6C4  Hawk).

Dave, there are a ton of folks out there who already do exactly what you’re asking.  Personally I would check Etsy first (I know, weird place to look for model airplane stuff).  If I couldn’t find someone who was advertising the printing service, I would look for a smaller vendor of items, and ask if they would print your files for you.

Google would probably provide a plethora of vendors for you.

Send me the stl file. You might look for a free one on Thingiverse before you buy one.

Thank You Howard.   I will send it when I get my grubs on it.  Actually have another offer as well.    Could stand to have two- one for another project.

Thank you Paul for the suggestion.   Sounds like a good one.   I do think I have found my printer(s) here in the 'family'.   I am eager to see what I end up with.

I have read that some public library’s have  3D printers for public use. Perhaps one in your area?

Might be good to know.   I have a huge new one close by.   For now I think we have this job covered.  I’ll have to carefully and strategically cut it to poke an Enya .45 through it.

Asked and answered.   Wanted to show the fantastic result that Dave Rigotti had making the dummy Wasp engine for me.

Thanks Dave!

Please share when you jig it up the first time. Even before you install it in the plane. I have a feeling this will look pretty special!

How much does that weigh Dave?
I ask because my  new B-17 could use something like that, if it was light enough.

How are you going to mount it? Will it stand up to the vibration there?  Again  more info for a possible use in my new plane.

Looks great and hope it works out for you.

Paul I don't know yet.   It is on the way from Dave.  I'll get it on the scale when it arrives.   The program can be altered to make whatever size you need.   I told Dave I wanted 5 1/4" diameter and thats what he sized it to.   Mounting- I dunno.   Probably make some aluminum mounting brackets attached to the back and some screws to the airplane.   I'm going to need it removable for engine/tank access.   I am thinking this would be pretty cool on the nose of a stunter.....I'd bet you could talk Dave into resizing and printing what you need.  I figure to use an extension shaft to get the real engine fully behind the dummy and maybe not have to cut away much.   I think I can get enough air around to the engine without having to cut away any cylinders ....

If you go electric  it would be easy to hide the motor. looks great.  3D printing will boost scale to a new level

Mostly to answer Paul-  I received the motors today (2) and one weights 2.1 ounces.   These I’m sure are larger diameter than you would use and they are solid material so you could Dremel away a little bit from the backside.   I will guess your four motors will weigh about 1 1/2 ounce each .

Thanks Dave. Even a total of 1.5 ounces for all four is more than I want at this time.
I will keep it in mind though!

I'd bet they'd be lighter than that Paul, the diameter of yours would be a lot smaller than what Dave is using.

If you could make one the proper size-then use it as a mold plug for vacuum forming.......

are they solid or hollow?  3-d printing can produce hollow objects.

Here's what the insides look like. Printed with 15% infill. 2 walls.  Hard to get much lighter in weight.

Thanks for everything Dave!   This last picture helps too.   I was wondering how I might attach some sort of mounting bracket.   Seeing the hollow spaces I think I can drill a few small holes through the rear covering in spots and JB weld an aluminum bracket in place.   Squeezing the JB through the holes should make a good anchor and not worry about surface adhesion.

Check your stock of Guillows kits for models with radial engines. They sometimes have a vacu-formed dummy engine to fit in the cowl. Before you cut out the part, fill it with hydrocal from the model train section of the hobby shop and let it harden, then pop it out for an instant mold plug. The old Williams Brothers plastic engine parts and kits are still available also I think..
  Type at you later,
