Title: Hi Johnson Stuka Stab
Post by: steve bittner on March 18, 2013, 02:36:23 PM
Bart the size of the updated stab is 5 3/4" by 24". This plane is a fast flying ship. Also Hi said if it turns tighter inside loops add down thrust, if outside tighter add up thrust. Let me know if you have any other question. You need to keep this ship light, especially the tail. Mine required some nose weight. Hi also had a note on the early 35s about crank bearing clearance being to tight to use some lapping compound. I wish I new how to copy & send it to the forum, sorry Im computer challenged.

Steve, thanks for the stab update. I assume the elevator increases by the same amount. I want to update my plans accurately.

                 Thanks,

Yes that is correct, 3"s stab, 2 3/4 elevator== 5 3/4 x 24". Hope this clarifies for you so you have the best one to use. Only sheeted center couple ribs, the rest open bay silk covered. Feel free to call me or email bittnersw@aol.com or #410 766 1052.

Is this updated stab/elevator considered to be classic legal?
I've got the wing built and covered for the Hi Johnson Stuka and I'm ready to start on the tail feathers.
By the way, this is the most difficult wing I have ever built

Larry, I cant imagine why it wouldn't be legal. It was done by Hi Johnson back in the late 50s as an update on his design & plans. I cant confirm, but Im sure there is people on here would agree. I will look at the plans I have and get back to you.
