There are a lot of great finishing tips and methods on the Tulsa Gluedobbers web page. Among the finishing process articles by Bradley Walker, Doug Moon, and John Miller, is an article by Nils Norland which contains a few bits of sage advice to consider when using the Rustoleum spray paint method.
http://www.tulsacl.com/Finishing.htmlMain points gleaned from the Gluedobbers Rustoleum article:
* Scuff surface with a "fine" Scotchbrite or 400 grit.
* Shake paint vigorously while heating the bottom of the can. Repeat. Repeat...
* Spray on a
very light fog coat. Do not seek full paint coverage on first coat.
* Use a heat gun at 1-2ft on the fogged coat for a few minutes, then leave it alone for an hour.
** Don't rush it. If the temperature is cool where you're painting, additional drying time will be necessary.
* Spray another light to medium fogged coat and repeat the heat gun procedure.
(beware of the heat gun blistering the paint) Let the finish dry at least an hour or longer.
* Spray the third and final coat and repeat the heat process.
** Let the paint dry for at least 72 hours before trying to use any low-temp iron covering or any exposure to fuel.
