Just a motivational pic for all those making Buccaneers. This one is a "Smokin" Buccaneer (on a pipe) 746. Power Ro-Jett/GMA .51. Hopefully it will be complete in a few weeks.

Osni: Thanks for you interest. The plane is a Buccaneer from an old kit by Custom Models that is not available anymore. Assembled weight in silkspan and clear dope is 56 ounces. When complete I hope to keep it under 65 ounces. Wing area is reported to be 650". Pipe mods were my own, design is by Alan Brickhaus. I won't know what prop until I fly it as it is my first tuned pipe ship. I think foam wings are still available from Cris Rigotti but don't know if plans are still available.

Last time I looked, Ultra Hobbies was kitting the Buccaneer's?

Not sure if they still are but Doug Moon had the smaller Buc and was kicking tail with it a couple years ago.

We used to offer a kit of both the Buccaneer 740 and Buccaneer 746 at
Ultra Hobby Products, but haven't offered either in several years. We are
doing ARFs and ARCs these days, and the Buccaneer 740 is definitely on
my list for future projects. The Buccaneers are great flying planes that
are easy to build and easy to fly. We do offer plans for both planes.

Looking good Pete! I am a little behind on mine (746) . Going over to Brian Moore's place in an hour to put togeather the carbon pushrods and set up the BC. Going to run a Mvvs 49 on a modified Mac's header , not a full tuned pipe. I hope it will motivate me to flying at a higher skill level .

MVVS on a header should be a good combination. A lot easier than modifying a non-pipe design to accomodate a full length pipe like I did. Keep us posted on your progress and a big Howdy! to Brian.

Glade to hear I'm not the only one who takes this much time to get stuff built (I've got a Nobler I still haven't finished and I started it when my son was born, he'll be 8 in a couple of weeks

Lookin good Pete!!! Mine is only several months old, so far. Buc 746 Profile Crist Rigotti cut the foam. Debating on wether I should lighten up the Stab and Elev or leave as is ?? there at 5 1/4 oz as is. Power is a T&L ST 51.

Lighten it up Leester, I think it is worth the effort. I made a full builtup stab/elevator assembly , fully sheeted , hinged, with control horn,and more area. Came out at 4 1/4oz, I know I can do lighter next time , not sure what it will weight with layer of light silkspan and paint to finish.

I didn't weigh mine but when the kit foam core stab turned out warped I made a built up one, probably similar to what Gordon did. It felt light and was straight. I'd assemble the componants and do a rough C/G check. If nose heavy, leave it. If tail heavy, re-do. Mine is still a bit tail heavy but the the engine I am using is lighter than a ST-51. If I had used a ST-51 w/tube muffler it probably would have balanced OK.

Progress is ongoing. Plane is painted, looks good, now for clear coats and more detailing. Have not been able to work on it for the past few weeks due to real world stuff getting in the way... but should be posting a finished pic soon. Great news about the RSM Buccaneer. That's about the size of the Buccaneer 740 but I understand that it is an earlier version...Nostalgia 30 eligible maybe?

I fly a 746p at 65oz with a ST51 no problems. stock 51 12/6 3 blade master/airscrew muffler pressure &uniflow

The Buccaneer series are good planes!

My son had both (by accident!). He won a 740 at a contest and it had the 746 wing cores, so Bill sent a set of 740 cores. The 746 wing was built into his '96 NATS (1st NATS!) plane. It was flown with a VF 40 on pipe. He made a LOT of progress with that plane! It is still probably his favortite, but it has been retired in one piece.

All the ones I have seen flew really well.

Yeah my 746 was made to look like Randy's Dreadnaught.
I used a lot of engines in that plane, I think at one point it had pretty much every pipe engine we owned put in it.
I liked the Aero 51 or .61 in there the most.
It is still in one piece in dad's basement, I do not know what we did right on that one but it was a really good plane from the beginning.
I took it to the '96 nats when it was pretty much brand new. Wind flipped it over the day of appearance judging and busted the canopy.
It also saw flushing, ny, charlotte many times, brodaks it saw a lot of action.
