Helping a friend build.
« on: March 16, 2014, 07:28:32 PM »
Hi Guys
In between my building sessions I been helping a friend get into the hobby. Ed bought a Skyray that I had and I told him if he wanted we could build it at my place. He is a teacher at the local college here so his time was limited to once a week. Took almost 6 month but he finally finished it Saturday. Painted the fuse Sig sky blue and $cote on the wings. He wanted to match the box picture as closely as possible. Using a Fox 35 for power the plane came out at 33.5oz.
We made some changes such as adding a 2 wheel landing gear, a tail wheel, stationary flaps, bigger wingtips, wingtip weight box, balsa tripler, and leadout slider.
The Skyray balances dead on with 3/4oz tip weight. He might add a muffler since he is still new at this.
A joke we have going is, "We are putting a lot of work in a plane that isn't going to last very long." All kidding aside I expect great things from him.

Looks great Jay; They are pretty rugged built from the kit and at that weight it should just bounce,"I hope". I really like the kit box finish.

It's great to get someone new into control-line flying, and even better to teach 'em how to build their own! Good job!

Can you explain your comment: "He might add a muffler since he is still new at this."

I'm a resistant muffler user, I understand their value in keeping the neighbors happy, but engines without mufflers are much easier to manage, especially for a newbie.

Plane looks great.  If your student pays attention he will have no problems flying the plane.   If he has a muffler for the Fox, use it.  They are no harder to start with or without  the muffler.  If he has not flown CL before, remember to short tank it and/or run slightly rich until he gets over the dizzies.

Hi Randy.   I don't think he can fly at your meet.   I  am trying to convince him to join AMA  but at this point he doesn't see the need.

As for the muffler, being a newby he is funny that way.   Like everything to be like  on the box.

I only showed him what to do and how to do it.  Hoping  that he takes it home with him.  I totally enjoyed the build together.

Skyray is a good start. That's what I started with. It will pop the wing and fuse at the TE one the first figure 9. Ask me how I know.
On the rebuild put a Flite streak wing in it. Andrew gave me the idea. A big improvement.  y1
