Title: Help with Adobe Acrobat
Post by: Glenn (Gravitywell) Reach on March 14, 2011, 01:35:56 PM
Hi all.  I would like to cdreate some Adobe Acrobat (pdf) files that have more than one page on them.  I have seen this for files that contain complete magazine articles and plans, or plans that have been scanned in peices and all of them on one PDF file.  Can someone walk me throught the process?  And please keep in mind...I'm a functioning idiot when it comes to computers! LOL H^^

If you have a Mac, it's trivial - create the document in whatever application you want (Word, Openoffice, etc) then print. When you get to the print dialog box, do "save as PDF".

On a PC, I think you have to have Adobe Acrobat (the full version, not just the reader) and append each page to the PDF document you create. It's been a while since I have had to do that so I would have to go back and refamiliarize myself with it.

In the Windows world, you do have to have an Acrobat writer, although I've heard of some freebie
PDF writers. Anyway, Acrobat writer (like all Adobe products) is fairly expensive. I use an academic
version 6.0 that cost me $150 several years ago.

One feature is that the Acrobat writer program creates a virtual printer, which any program can use. If
you're using Word, it merges a PDF writer function, and provides access to PDF document controls.

The Acrobat Writer program also allows direct editing of the PDF document at text and graphics levels including
inserting/deleting pages, figures, even sound and animation plus links to other parts of the document, external
documents and internet URLs.

You can also control compression, add security features and passwords, insert markups and comments, etc.
It's quite a bit more than a simple PDF writer.

PS - You don't have to append pages one by one, you simply print your entire document as a PDF. Also, the writer
allows you to insert/merge multiple documents together, PDF file editing.

Glen;

How many do you have?  I have Acrobat Pro and can assist.

Hi Bob....thanks for the offer, but I have tons of stuff I wanted to put onto one PDF file.  Its for a plans project I'm doing at Hip Pocket Aeronautics.  I guess I will have to find another way of going about it.  They want so darn much for their programs!  If they brought the price down to a reasonable level they would probably sell thousands more.  Oh well....I'll just have to look around for a free-ware product.  Thanks again and thanks to those that answered me.

Don't mess with Adobe.....those programs attach your operating system, and if you ever have to delete any part of Adobe....your sys may crash. :X

Hey Glenn,

You can use a program like PDFSAM to merge the files together into one. I did this with the Half-A Flyer pdf's.

www.pdfsam.org is where you download it from (free).

-Chris

ps. Also could use the PC version of OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org)

John, if by "attach" you mean install, they definitely do that. However, the crash comment needs to be qualified. Adobe software is generally first rate and well-behaved, used by many professionals. Like virtually all modern software, it can be safely uninstalled using Windows' Control Panel function. Granted, if you simply DELETE some portion of it, you can have problems.

Many (all?) Adobe programs were initially developed on Apple/Mac platforms and ported to other operating systems. Mac software must be properly installed and uninstalled as well - Mac OS X 10.5 Snow Leopard or whatever replaces it is a powerful operating system with necessary complexities. (BTW, Windows 7 and OS X 10.5 indicate many updates and revisions - a fact of life for software in general.)
