I took photos at the Team Trials in Clevenland, September 4-5, 1971 and I don't remember who these flyers are and I need help. The FAI 1972 team members are Bob Gieseke, Gerry Phelp and Bill Werwage.
Thanks,
Roger

I like the cars in the background. Does the AMA keep any record of old numbers? If so, you may be able to give them the date and the wing numbers and get some names.

My Dad judged that year, along with Dave Gierke, and I believe that is he sitting on a stool in the bottom picture.

Bob Hunt was able to identify two of those three pilots from that 71 Team Trials. Of the 23 people that were there, I can recognize most of them except for the three in these photos. From those already identified, then the one in that first photo could be:
Steve Johnston
Donald Buffo
Neal Thompson
R.G. Tran
Bernie Trent was there so that piece of information by Bob is probably good.
To respond to Chris, yes, Dave Gierke was there as a judge. He also wrote a good article on that 71 stunt team selection finals in the Jan 72 issue of Flying Models.

First pix has mine and my brother's airplanes in the background. BRAIN FADE on the ID!

Found this, seems to compare to photo 1 perhaps our ID?

Cool old pics! y1
What's the plane in the middle, photo number 16?

Together IV was in Jan 78 Model Aviation. Credit the design by Steve Johnson, captions show a Steve Johnson, text by Larry Kruse. In the Kruse text, Kruse mentions Steve Johnston. Plane in article, nicely finished, AMA number 955. Different than the photo above. (In the photos, they show the model finished in Centennial colors and has a neat tool box to match.)

The "Invader" looks like it has a lot of "Avenger" influence. Great looking design. y1

Steve, if you're talking about the first car on the right with the front end visable, it's a 68 Coronet.
Yes, I'm sure.

Yes, the first photo is of Steve Johnston who used to be a local flyer. Him and his wife started a hobby shop and was making a big success of it. His accountant told him they were not supposed to be making a profit the first year of business. Got into real estate and went like crazy. The last time I saw him fly was at River Front Park in KCMo. Still had the touch and talent. Heard one time he was the head man of the real estate organization of some kind living in a million dollar home. Don't know if I can contact him or not.

Again thanks, #^

I'm pretty sure I saw a photo of Mike Keville wearing those at a free-flight contest at Taft many years ago.

Nah! Those were different stripes: red, white, blue. Wish I still had 'em!
