HELP NEEDED IDENTIFYING AN ENGINE SCREW
« on: November 14, 2013, 02:29:31 PM »
A friend owns a business that supplies  miniature screws and hardware to our community. They  came across  a large quantity of  Alloy Socket Cap Screws- 3mm x 12mm with a .6 pitch and are unable to figure an application/engine for them . They'd like to list it in their catalog.
My guess is an R/C throttle arm screw.
Maybe someone can help as these folks are great and vital to the hobby.
Thanks !

Hi Frank - These might be a special order to fit the OS 35S and 30S.  I have a couple we could try.

The early OS's, plus early ST's, G.21 series, .51bb, .56bb and .60bb. Most everybody just puts in 5-40's.  H^^ Steve

Oh dear, please let's not have another ST46 head screw size "discussion"!  You are absolutely right, put in 5-40s and we can all move on with our lives!

M3 X .6 screws are JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) older Enya engines use these. The 12mm length is too long for many Enya applications, but they can be shortened. What are they asking for the screws?

They have 50,000 pieces , but no prices yet. They surmised that they are for Enyas, but as Tom pointed out, there  maybe some OS applications, too.
I'd like to be able to tell them head bolts, backplate bolts or whatever so that they can properly catalog them.
Thanks

Enya used THIS THREAD SIZE, and others,  for head bolts and front cover screws on everything from .09s thru the Tyhoon 63s, in natural steel, blackened, and nickel plated in slotted and Phillips head.  A table is needed to see all the combinations used on all the applications.

I'd like to buy some, too

I'd certainly buy about 100 of them. Now does anyone have  M3.5x6x10 which seems to be another unobtanium screw. Used in period Enya 45, and a few other odd applications. Other sizes are available but would like to not have to cut off screws continually.

M3.5 x 0.6 is standard metric coarse Dennis.  Can be found on Fleabay over your way but a bit longer so you'll need to shorten to 10 long.  These are for OS so check if OS uses coarse or fine pitch before purchasing.

The link is for a 3.5mm and does not list the pitch.

That's what I said!  I don't know if OS uses coarse or fine.  Someone who has an OS engine using this size thread can confirm

Edit for update!  Got to my OS 60 RE in the still demolished shed!  It has M3.5 x 0.6 x 12 head screws and the Enya 45X has the same diameter and pitch so the ones on fleabay will do the job.   The 2mm extra length can't argue with a hacksaw, file or lathe!  LL~

JIS was only thieved by the Japanese from the German DIN Standard before ISO was thought of hence the (to some) odd pitches on some diameters.   http://mdmetric.com/tech/tict.htm  M3.5 not an ISO prefered size.

I've not seen a M3.5 that wasn't a .6 thread. But I was more concerned about the length which in this case is 10mm. That length is not made period. The few suppliers that I've checked go from 8 to 12 m with no 10's available. Of course I can get them if I order about 1000 minimum order. can't find a reason why that size is skipped either. Enya used them in the 45 but they were JIS screws and I'd prefer to exchange them without having to perform surgery on about 24 screws.
