Heed Warnings
« on: July 28, 2023, 03:56:22 PM »
This old hardhead almost did it again.  but it has made me do a lot of reading.  Not only the new Stunt book but browsing through the Flying Lines Newsletter.   What happened to me was I had to change the battery on my riding mower.  No problem right!   Just four nuts to loosen/take off.   Ptting the new battery in I could not get the hold down lined up and I was pushing it  not realizing temps were in the 90F degrees.  Got it finally locked down and started the mower.  Amazing how fast it starts with new battery.  Proceded ti mow front yard and had to move kids toys out of my way using my cane. without getting off the mower.  Made a couple of rounds and I realized something was wrong.  Headed up to the drive to park the mower.  I do not remember getting off the mower.  All I know wife is telling me to get in the house after getting me a big glass of water.  Ant way after getting almost back to normal I did get in the house and got a dry T-shirt.  Got tired of doing games inthe computer and went to the Flying Lines site.  clicked on the combat section and  starte reading.  What has kept me reading is a series called 20 years of combat.   I am up to the 20th instalment.  A lot of people I had not heard of or met written about on there.  I also thought why couldn't I with permission down load all of and put it in book form.  I am writting this as I take a break and getting another cup of coffee.  Well back to reading.

ADM: you have my permission to move this if you wish But it is amazing how many people flew combat and stunt plus other events.

Doc;

The BIG THING when reading your write-up was you and the darn mower and the outside temperature........................

Take heed buddy.................

Your body just told you something.

Take care of your body and listen to it.

Don't want to read about you pushing up daisies.

Might seem a bit harsh but believe me, been there done that and have 2 stents installed to prove it.

Take care and keep flying

My heart doctor told me 2 years ago I needed a stint put in. Got that done, and they put me on blood thinner to keep the stint from getting clogged up. After a year, they changed my blood thinner instead of just taking me off of it which is normal after a year. So, in February I made a 90 mile trip by ambulance to Topeka to have a bleeding ulcer cauterized. Feeling much better again. If it aint one thing it is another. My hemoglobin was down to 7. It should be between 14-16. Back up now to 14. Had another scope to check my gut and all is well.

  You gotta take it easy Doc!! In this kind of heat, ( which is NOTHING new by the way! I've had to work in weather this hot and worse ) I don't plan anything outside after 12 noon. I can't take it like I used to. I get up, get outside and get it done before the sun gets overhead. Either that or wait until the last hour or two before sundown and the sun is behind the houses and trees. I don't rush or push myself and plan work accordingly . The new knee still has me slowed down so I know I can't overdo it and only have one speed right now!

Jim, glad you made it okay.   Dan, both of my knees keep me slowed down.  With back brace on I do trimming riding the mower.  Probably looks strange to the neighbors.  I too think back when 100 plus F degrees was nothing. throwing hay bails around and other things.  But some how I'm going to make 100 so I can see my great grandaughter graduate school.

Both you gentlemen take care. H^^

The heat thing is real. I worked outside most of my life and heat and humidity together will sap you of all your strength. I cannot adjust to the heat like I use to. I have flown many contests in 100 degree weather, but at 82, I am done with that program. Some guys can still handle it, Not me. Take care of yourself Doc. We can still tell lies of how it use to be. LOL. You to Dan the Shark man. I always admired your Shark.

This is true.  I'm now 62, but doctor tells me I have the bloodwork and metabolism of a 12-year old.  Well, I apparently have the common sense of a 12-year old, too.  Clearing a 40-foot x 10-foot side of the house of bricks, weeds, vines and cutting up and tossing a bunch of old trimwork from remodeled house yesterday.  It was maybe 100 degrees at the time.  Had a sleeveless T shirt, shorts and a hat with a brim.  Next thing I know, I'm sitting on my butt with blurred vision and dizzy.  Clothes were drenched.  Wife brought me a glass of water, which became three.  Went inside for about 30 minutes and drank another glass of water before going back to tackle the job.  Didn't bother me again.  But I know better and I know to hydrate before working in those conditions.

Might have been more careful if the doctor would have told me I had the bloodwork of an 92-year old.  I would have been smart and paid someone else to do it.

Three years ago I had two bouts of heat stress. My wife told me to pay someone else to paint the house and I told her no that we would save money. Should have listen to her!! It hit me with no warning! Lived in Florida all my life and worked in the heat from morning till dark and it never bother me till then. Now at 62, I am thankful for the things I still can do and count my blessings. Once it gets 82 degrees outside, with the high humidity kicking in I'm done. Drink adult pedialyte, lots of breaks and work at a slow pace. I don't like it but that's what has to be done. No more all day flying with the heat feeling like 102. I'm glad all of y'all are doing ok and we will still be able to enjoy our hobby.
