Hearing impaired
« on: November 19, 2020, 07:20:28 PM »
As the title says hearing impaired.  Been told it was the running of model engines that caused my hearing loss.  They never think of the years I worked in a factory and the telephone office how much noise there.  I know I was surprised the first time I walked into a central office with all the switching equipment.  Even with the new electronic switching with all the fans to keep equipment cool is not quiet.  But,  I would like those that post videos to in captions with the videos so we, myself can read what is being said like programs on TV.  One reason I don't join the on line forum talk session each week. Hello John, I don't know how many know how to add captioning to their videos. Unfortunately the service used for the weekly video chats does not support live captioning. Google meet does but it does not stream to Youtube so I guess that is why it is not used over 8X8 Jitsi. A shame really because we would love to have you join our hangouts. I will see if I can figure out a work around that would allow you to join the weekly video chats. If I come up with something I'll let you know.

Doc,
I like many others have the same hearing problems for the same reasons that  you  said were the cause of your deafness.
I bit the bullet and went and got hearing aids. Not cheap at  well over 4K. Best money ever spent. You really do miss out on a lot of things with diminished hearing. Do you know that you can get  hearing aids with rechargeable batteries and also offer a lot of pluses like your smart phone can be connected wireless to your hearing aids so you don't miss out on things you listen to on the phone. Other features abound only restriction is your pocketbook.
you won't believe the difference when you get your hearing aids.

Larry, I have been told that hearing loss is not covered by the VA.  Am I wrong?  I spend 6 years working under running jet aircraft and the ear protection they had then was a joke.  I got out with adequate "hearing" but I can still hear those jets running (tinnitus) 24/7.

I have been through several sets of hearing aids.  With the virus shutting things down can't get the last set repaired and they were the best.  I keep forgetting to take them when I start sweating and that is what killed them.  But, as I tell people when I quit sweating watch out as I may need the EMT's again. I got mine at Sams.  $4K for a pair..   I am convinced that the on line ones at $500 or so per pair will work just as good..  The only problem is getting a hearing loss profile to program into the unit.   I think some of the cheepies come with a cellphone app to set things.   Having dealt with hearing aids for 2 years now I think I could program my own now.  Anybody had good luck with the $500/pair hearing aids?

Coverage entitlements depend on several factors.  When you register with the VA you get a number "level" and that number (I think it's #1 thru 9 - can't remember now) determines your entitlements eligibility.  In my case, as a Purple Heart recipient (think I'm level 3 with PH) with a service connected hearing disability (receive a monthly $$ disability also), I get "free" hearing aids & glasses.  I do know of others that were not PH but served their time and receive hearing aids.  You just need to register and find out what entitlements you qualify for.

Luckily, our local clinic and staff gives good service and now with the added Community Care and Urgent Care options,  makes for a good health care service.  Has some "hiccups" but overall, very I've been satisfied.
