Hats Off and a Big Thank You to Joe Gieseke
« on: November 25, 2018, 05:31:04 PM »
I received a color swatch from  Bobs Nobler yesterday.
I now know for a fact that it is Aero Gloss Stearman Red, which is no longer available.
I am very good at blending and matching colors and I found a mix of Miss Ashley Red and Sig Fokker Red and a splash of black gave me a perfect match to the Aero Gloss Stearman Red.

Thanks a bunch Joe, the paint swatch was very helpful!

Here is the sample that Joe sent me.
Just think, this is from an iconic plane that won a World Championship and multiple NATs Championships events.
To me, holding this sample is like holding the ball that Kirk Gibson hit for a home run in game one of the 88 World Series. (And this from an A’s fan).

was a Charley Finley and A's fan until Vida Blue

Oakland 1969 to 1973 in high school then Alameda County Drafted.... low lottery number.....grrrr

Oakland Raiders and Oakland A's both had public buss programs where your student ID got you a free ride to the Coliseum and a $1 ticket to the nose bleed seats....

Raders winning Supre Bowl rings was fun ...NO HITTER Oakland A's games sucked big time

Not that I would necessarily recommend using the real thing (notorious for problems with compatibility, even from one batch to the next), did you check J&M? It wouldn't surprise me in the least if they had a lot of Aero-Gloss, probably in the rack near the back room, maybe even what you need.

I know the feeling.  I lived about a mile from Hobby Park and flew with Bob during the years just after the WC.  I must have launched that plane at least a hundred times.  I learned so much just watching him fly.  To me it was like Mikhail Baryshnikov doing the Nutcracker.  To this day when I see Doug Moon fly it reminds me so much of Bob (without the pipe).

Yes, I would bet that Cliff might have some stashed in the back, but I would be leary about using Aero Gloss.
I remember my father having issues with that stuff. Something about putting Aero Gloss over butyrate or butyrate over Aero Gloss. Either way I would be screwed since I use butyrate in preparation for paint and for the clear coats.
I would definitely prefer to mix butyrate colors to achieve the shade of red I desire.

Joe,

I still fly one of your dad's planes regularly.  He is still with us all the time!   :) :)

I hope all is well.

Hi Doug

That's nice to hear. I think about you guys down in Dallas often. We are well here and I hope the same is true for everyone back home. Hopefully we will met again soon.
