HEADS UP...Scammers may be here
« on: May 27, 2023, 12:25:06 PM »
1)  On May 24, 2023 I posted this wanted ad for a FOX 35 Piston & Cylinder Set.   (See attachment of ad)
2)  On May 25, 2023 I received a PM giving an email address to contact where I could buy the parts.   (See attachment of PM)
3)  On May 26, 2023 I sent an email to the person "Steve Buffett" and communicated up to today.  The communication seemed very odd, so I started asking questions and eventually asked for a pic of the parts.  The person sent me a pic of an engine.  I googled the engine pic and it from a listing on Ebay.
4)   After being high suspicious of a scammer, I researched the person who PM'ed me.  They opened their account her the day after I posted my want ad. and the day they PM'ed me.  (See attachment of PM author)
5)  The engine picture sent to me is from an active Ebay listing.  (See attachment of listing)

The above facts lead me to believe we need to be very careful.  The is the first time since being on SH that I have had an inkling of doubt dealing with people here.

Careful!  Scammers can do a lot of bad things with just your email address - Which they now have.  At the very least you should change your password to a new STRONG version, one that you have never used anywhere else.

Thanks.  I got a strong password.

Can sparky tell us more about who owns the SH account that PMed me and started this scam?   What is their real name?

I’ve been exchanging messages with that clown. I though something was fishy. Get him off the site.

If you read the classifieds over on RCG, there are warnings exactly about the types of scams you just talked about. They either have exactly what you want or they send you to a friend who has what you want. They always use a stock photo or one lifted off another site. Ask for a picture with a date or a hand written word on it and unless they can photoshop watch them vanish. The mods here need to ban them. Another clue is a low or no post count and a recent join date. Post a wanted add for a made up item that sounds real or something virtually unobantainable as a test and watch the scammers will come out. They usually ask to be paid paypal friends and family. Try offering them regular Paypal and even offer to cover the fees. Many will vanish right there as they know you will pull back the money when they don't deliver. It might be a good idea to pin this thread or a scammer warning at the top of the classified section here.

Well add me to the list. I was scammed by this guy yesterday. I wish I had seen this post first.  He followed the same MO as described by Rusty.

I just got the exact same message about a Double Star 54 I’m looking for. I guess he doesn’t realize we’re onto him.

I had recent WTB on SH classified. Got same message, first from Karenmicheals and the got sent email for Steve Buffett.  As you all have described,he wants payment using PayPal. I told him I want to see photos first, he said he will send "when he gets home". I now doubt I'll ever hear from him again. Is there a way to report him ? Glad I read this post.

Another to be aware of is Chris Wicks of Wicks and Sons Collectables.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

His facebook Page has been taken down.  Some of his other "sites" appear to be scams.
