Has this happened to you?
« on: September 21, 2019, 04:11:07 PM »
I got home from flying yesterday and my adorable wife says:"Can you please change your clothes before dinner?"
Me:"What's wrong with them?"
Wonderful, adorable wife:"They smell like model airplanes!"
Me:"They do?  I love the smell of burnt castor oil!  Don't you?"
Beautiful, wonderful, adorable wife:"No"
Me:"What?  Huh?  How?  Uhh, okay"   :P

Several years ago  I had the opportunity to fly with a great group in Ireland. One guy was quite adept in flying a diesel combat ship. His helper wore an old heavy oilskin raincoat. When asked about it the helper told me he wore it to rend off the either smell of his clothes when he got home. Laying the coat on the ground he simply washed it down with a garden hose. No smell, no problem with the little lady!

Way back when I was playing with F2C planes I would come home, park in the alley behind the house,  in the back door straight down the steps to a shower head that was in the middle of the basement.   After taking a shower was allowed back upstairs to get dressed.  I kind of miss that little house. I have a completely separate set of flying clothes. Even if I am flying electric, the oil smog from the greasy set will linger. Have you notice that there are fewer mosquitos near flying fields when the water is predominantly downwind?  LL~

Wife never cared for the "sticky" feeling of the exhaust residue on her arms. She was quite the gal for launching my combat planes for all those years. A trooper.

Even though I LOVE the exhaust smell of nitro w/castor, gotta' admit that I don't care for the sticky residue either.

Mine hates ALL the smells...the Triumph exhaust smells (especially top-down), motorcycle, lawn-mower, weed-eater. I also wind up undressing in the garage before stinking up the house. And lately, model airplane smells. She's been tolerating smells for 24 years...even my own "exhaust smells!" LL~

In my younger days when serving on submarines, after a 3 month deployment I smelled "bad" for days!  I didn't notice it but everyone else did!  I was required to leave my sea bag outside for quite some time before my stuff got washed.

I was on the USS James Madison SSBN-627 in my youth.   We were under water for 72 days straight one time, and when we surfaced to enter the harbor I stuck my head out of the hatch to smell the fresh air.  I was so used to the stink of the submarine that for a little while fresh air smelled bad.  Like Don's wife, my wife wouldn't allow my sea bag to come in the house for a couple of weeks.

On the other hand, I like the smell of castor, ever since I bought my first Cox PT-19 in the sixth grade.   I can smell castor for a couple of days after flying, even though I'm wearing clothes I never wear when flying.

I asked my wife a while back if she could smell the castor.   Fortunately, she said, "No."

Long live castor oil!

Before I switched to Walmart Super Tech 2 stroke oil in my ignition engines, I use to run 70wt motor oil. If you have ever followed a vehicle that is burning a lot of oil, that is what my engines exhaust smelled like. The 2 stroke oil has very little odor as it is ashless. Much like the old radial engine oil they used back in the 40's.

Oh Scott! I know the feeling/remark! We two share an old Clothes rack from my Dad's office in our bedroom! When I come home from a wonderful day of flying I hang my "Smelly Cloths" on the rack and She...complains that the whole room stinks of flying fuel! Well dang! Its my fun and since I am paying the bills ...what the ..f..k..! I think the "stink" is just great! And I leave my stuff air out in the bedroom! So there! Eventually she washes it all away!

My problem came when I switched to electric and I stopped coming home smelling like burnt caster.  How anybody could complain about that smell is a mystery but not smelling like what you told her you were going to be doing can be even worse!  Now I make sure that I get behind one or two as they make their pipe puddles on the circle and I come home with the right smell.

Fuel smell doesn't bother Jess as much as when I'm applying dope in the basement.....  1950's original wood floors aren't exactly air tight, and my basement workshop has exposed floor joists...  that delightful smell just permeates the house!

Now the guys know why I added a basement bathroom (with showers) down by my shop.  I get home, throw my clothes in the washer (to wash separately, of course) and take a shower.  That way Mrs. Clean doesn't complain..... ;D

In the 1960’s I installed updated electronics on diesel subs. Newer ones were ok but older ones were so bad I got sick after one hr. Went on shake down of latest voice recognition electronics. I had to stay on for two weeks in newer sub. I through those clothes away.
