.2 Carbon Fiber Veil/Tissue
« on: November 24, 2014, 01:09:31 PM »
Maybe I am losing my memory but I was searching on the net to buy some more Carbon Fiber Veil and the cheapest I can find it is $15.00 a yard.  Is this the going price on this material now or does anyone have a cheaper source?

Thanks

Mike

That's a good price if it is actually a square yard!  I bought some from SIG, or Brodak (don't remember).  It was about that price but the piece was smaller (about 24" X 30")

Would .2oz carbon be about the same strength as .5oz glass cloth?

Strength?  It depends on what the definition of the application is.  Carbon is best in resisting compression/reflex motion.  Tensile, not so hot.

Hi Mike,
I found a place called CFS (Carbon Fiberglass supply that sells it for $9.50 a yard...The only catch is that you have to buy a 500 Yard roll for $4750.00!   LL~ LL~ LL~  Interested?

Actually the last I bought was $15.25 per yard.  So your price is right in line with that.

Mike,
I did find this place that sells .2 oz carbon veil for $14.95 per yard for one yard but if you buy a three yard roll for 39.95 the price is down to $13.32 per yard.  link is below.

Make sure you get the "soft" type. It looks very uneven and fluffy. The flatter, more uniform type is made that way by using much more sizing to keep it flat and even, and that will lead to pinholes in the final finish.

Yeah, the problem is that you place an order and you get what they send.  I've recieved both types from the same supplier.

Thanks to all for the help.  I had no idea that there was soft an fluffy and non soft and fluffy.  I have never seen that you have a choice in this as Randy stated.  Is there a source that sells only soft and fluffy?

Hi Mike

Try CST Composites  http://www.cstsales.com/index.html.  I've used their carbon tissue with good results.   :)  Their description of carbon tissue/veil mentions "not filled with sizing" for ease of wetting out and a smooth finish.  Try it you'll like it.

CST is in Tehachapi, CA, and owned by Matt and Gail Gewain. Matt was World F1A (towline glider ff) in 1983, but he is also a very good F1C and R/C glider flier. They'll know what you need!  D>K Steve

Randy:

I am very concerned. On Wednesday I was in a grocery store waiting to go through the register. As usual I checked on what the magazine covers had to say (hey it's the only way I get to know what's happening in the world) and found out that once again I was not chosen by People Magazine as the "sexiest man in the world". First Mike forgets and that's bad enough but to be ignored by People Magazine - WOW! Next thing you know someone will tell me that Santa and the Tooth Fairy are not real!!!!!!!

Waking up "Sleepwalkers" has dropped way down on my worry list big time. Besides, he's probably still half frozen living in New Orleans like he does. By the time he "thaws" he's not likely to remember anyway.

The acp link is a particularly good one for modelers.  The owners, the Sparr family, although into a lot of high tech sporting/musical, etc. goods also have modelers in the family.  They are where the talk of soft/hard CF veil came from and are well aware of the differences in application.  In addition they handle hundreds of different forms of CF and FG materials and constructs that have valuable applications in our hobby; tubes, rods, sheets in a variety of forms, etc.

Although I'm not currently "active" at the building bench (or the flying field, for that matter) I retain ACP in high esteem and used to visit their facility in Livermore and, earlier, on the San Francisco peninsula, reasonably regularly.  I encourage modelers interested in high tech composites to spend some well directed time at their web site:  http://www.acpsales.com/company.htm .
