Title: Happy Columbus Day!
Post by: Steve Scott on October 12, 2009, 04:44:21 PM
Aside from it also being my 24th wedding anniversary, as a federal employee, it's also a holiday for me.  ;D

But, this is what we were presented with this morning - and we still have 2½ weeks to go before Halloween   n~ :

I doubt if the Native Americans share the same opinion.

Nor do they share our festive enthusiasm for Thanksgiving.

When I was active duty at Hanscom AFB in Bedford, MA, I ran down to Plymouth Plantation for a Thanksgiving dinner.  The Native Americans staged a "protest".

Will, I lived most of my life in an area where we had an 8ft wall of snow each side of our long driveway every winter, beautiful fall colors, Bear, Deer, Turkey, along with the Racoons, Possums, Skunks, etc on our property.

I don't miss shoveling snow, but I do miss the mountains, and color.

After 14 years, I still laugh when the Texans complain about 55 degrees being cold!

Here in Tucson, anything less than 60F is "cold".  Yes, we get occasional dips into the 40s during Jan. & Feb. --- intolerable!  In fact, anything less than 75F is unacceptable.

As a former resident of NJ, N. Illinois and Maine, all I can say is.....thank goodness I'm HERE.

For us, or me especially, anything below 50 degrees is not good for me (I just start complaining it is cold out) and it isn't good for me trying to start an OS 35S.  You should'a seen how much fuel and lighter fluid I put into the motor just to get the motor to burp at Palisades on Sunday :o

Tom,
I know what you mean as to the "wall of snow" you mentioned.  During my three years ast Quonset Point, RI, we surely had that, then I went to upstate NY after the Navy and didn't improve that part of my life much!  But - it was gorgeous country!!!!!!  And gorgeous people as well.
Blessings,
Will

They didn't make out so bad.

Without Colombo, they wouldn't have dirt bikes, snow mobiles, Jeeps, and phones.

And, oh yeah, horses.

Just 'cus the losers are sore, doesn't mean the winners can't party.

Our current president does white bashing all day every day.  He doesn't need any help.

They didn't make out so bad??????? Thats hard to believe when you take into consideration that only a small % of the Tribes are left. With all the wonderful deseases we brought them to deal with its a wonder any of them are left. I've always wondered why when they killed people it was a massecure and when they were killed it was a "Great Victory"?

Here's some Colombus trivia for you:

The guy's real name is Cristobal Colon.  I think "Colombus" came from the fad of adopting a "Greek-sounding" name, which was deemed as sophisticated at the time.

The Cathedral in Seville, Spain, features a giant indoor tomb reported to contain Colombus' remains!  One of many sites around the world claiming to hold his corpse.  The docents at the cathedral claim they have proof that the bones contained are those of Colombus.

There is a giant statue of Colombus at the waterfront in Barcelona, Spain.  They claim that his ships were built here, and he departed from Barcelona on his voyage to the new world.

Hey, lighten up !!  You gotta bury the hatchet and smoke the peace pipe some time.

Chief Pontiac invaded Detroit (my birthplace) in 1763 and killed 2,316 people.  But I can forgive and forget.  After all, they were only English soldiers, no colateral damage.  Legitimate counterforce warfare!  Heck, I bought six cars from him.

Chief Blue Jacket killed 700 Americans, mostly women and childern, down in Ohio in 1790.  Personally, I would never forgive that.  Countervalue warfare to say the least, and maybe ever TERRORISM!.   But then they went ahead and named an NHL team after him in "Columbus", of all places.   Ohio State fans are capable of ANYTHING!  Naming the city after a white racist and the hockey team after an indian terrorist.

Of course Colombus fans might say he was only looking for a short cut to China, but we all know his real agenda was exterminating American Indians (who he didn't imagine even existed when he began the journey).

What ever happened to the Paleo indians who lived here before the last bunch came here about 10,000 years ago? Recent research has identified some of them coming from an area of what is now France. Apparently, these were the ancestors of the Clovis people.

It is or was great to see snow.  Things seem so much cleaner after the fresh fallen snow.  But, after reading some of the posts that, to me seem very political, it seems this post has gotten way off course.  Maybe we should cancel all the Holidays, each and every one of them.  No more days off for any hard working Americans.  Also go back to 6 day work weeks and eveything closed on Sundays except for Hospital, Fire and Police.  The generation running things now scares me.  DOC Holliday
