My daughter is 10 years old and I have her Sig Buster that I picked up at at a swap meet cleaned up and ready to go after sitting for a while. I was wondering what kind of a handle would be good for a 10 year old size wise . Thanks T.J.

E-Z-Just made a small version of their common full sized handle. It also was red, but about an 1" shorter, just right for kids.

I've always thought it important the handle fit the hand pretty close otherwise the new pilot (or any pilot) will pick the thing up a little different each time or it will slip some in the hand which in either event will give a different feel and airplane response each time. I grew up with the little Hot Rock which was still big for me in early years. I make my own handles and you may need to do the same for her. I made my 7 year old grandsons handle to fit him exactly. I think I will have to fit him a new handle each time he gets fit for new shoes. Most all the bought handles I've seen are simply going to be too big for her I'm afraid. Maybe you could fit spacers somehow to fit her better.

That's what I learned as a young teenager and you can purchase them on ebay.

I believe there's a guy selling new knock-offs.

I still have and sometimes use, the U-Reely I learned CL on. Still have it!

You can't be serious! The U-Reely was the biggest piece of junk ever foistered on the CL community! Absolutely worthless. Tremendous overhang....no real feeling for CL flying.

Cheap and quick is the yellow Sullivan one that is available, can even be found at some hobby shops. The all plastic one, not the one with the metal frame. It's adjustable for neutral, is nice and light, and comes with leadouts. Makes a great beginner handle.

Another option in this case might be to just make one.

And yeah, U-Reelys look cool hanging on the wall in your shop, but that's about all they're good for.

I've gotta agree with the yellow Sullivan handle.
Honestly you'll be fine with anything that has a shorter spacing.
I would however stay away from anything with a bias but that's my own preference.

By the way, the Buster is a great plane to train on

It was my second build and I've used it to train loads of people.

I gotta agree with Mike here. A 10 year old will most likely not be able to lift the thing up anyway! My dad had one when we were kids. Piece of junk!

TJ: Check out the handle that Hangar 9 makes for the CL PT-19 ARF.
It's a nice handle, but not too big. My son has been using one for
several years. He's 17 now, but when he was younger his hands were
small and he had no problem using this handle. Just about every hobby
shop in the country has an account with Horizon Hobby, which is Hangar 9's
parent company. So, getting one is no problem at all.

Children sometimes have short attention spans, just like adults with short thinking abilities.

It's only a start and my advice is rock solid.

You have to sample, handle and work the warehouse inventory before you become the family CEO.

When we started out, the only real (not 1/2A) handle we had was the BIG EZ Just. At the time I never knew there was anything wrong with it, and up until I started learning to fly the pattern it was still ok. About that time another flyer suggested I borrow his handle with narrower line spacing, it made the planes easier to fly and fit my hand better.

What I'd recommend is something small and light enough to be comfortable, since that's what important. It'd also be good if it were easy to adjust (for neutral) and durable. A small cable handle should be fine, and if more precision is acceptable at the trade off of not being as easily adjustable, a hard point handle would be fine. I'd avoid anything big, heavy, with 5" line spacing, or a million adjustable features.

I was thinking this Tuesday, when my small-handed wife was flying my plane with my nice, wide handle, that the world needs handles with adjustable widths for this sort of thing.

I like the looks of the Hanger nine handle I also like the looks of Larry's handle and had thought about that but she wants to try my Flite streak if I don't kill it first is Larry's handle rated up to a . 15 or can it handle more. I flew last week for the first time in 31 years with the clubs old Guillow's trixter trainer 111 with a Sullivan handle the yellow one with the aluminum boomerang on the front and found it comfortable for me I am going to order one for now and see what I like, (I have huge Bear paws LOL) and try a bunch of other ones this spring at the field. I used to fly 1/2 a years ago with a Carl Goldberg red plastic handle and it hangs in a place of honor in my office next to the 10x6 power point I broke last Week ! Thanks for the suggestions, well most of them LOL! T.J.

Not to mention that the U-reely is probably too heavy for a 10 year old girl to hold at arms length for more than a few seconds.
I have a large EZ just and a U-reely hanging on the wall of my shop just to remind me of "The Bad Old Days"...

The yellow sullivan handle is a good bet but they do have a weakness. The cables tend to fray very quickly where they twist through the eyelets in the steel portion of the handle.

The RSM one looks good but I've never seen one in person.

Wasn't there a sort of tandem handle designed for an adult to take over when the child got dizzy, made a wrong move or whatever?

Whilst its all good to joke about this I would consider being in the centre with said daughter just in case she tries a quick figure '9', the lines go slack or is about to land dead upwind, so being able to grab the control back just may be paramount to the models short life span.

First two pictures show Ed Culver's dual-instruction handle.

A D.I.Y. hardpoint handle is my suggestion. Make it a snug fit over the index/pinky width and make it so you can enlarge this gap as the hand grows. You could use a small TED handle, and just fit some balsa spacers that could be carved away as required as needed.

The .15 handle is plenty strong if you increase the wire diameter. We were trying to fill a niche for smaller models and 1/2a size planes. The hard point "Expo" handle is now available, though not listed on the website yet.

I got lucky today my Lady friend and I went to an outdoor flea market / tractor show one of the vendors had about 200 engines that he knew nothing about I bought all his Fox's ( 8 ) for 60 bucks 5 35 stunts a 4 bolt 19 cl a 29 combat and another combat that isn't marked. I will have to ask Larry Scarinzi what the combat motors are at our next meeting . I headed over to the food area and a guy had a cigar box of cl stuff I gave him 20 for it , it had 3 handles in it a small hot rock a large size ez-just and one that might be an old Sullivan. Pretty good day and I already ran two of the 35's.T.J.
