Title: Half A ducted fan
Post by: Dave Nyce on January 02, 2023, 12:03:06 PM
Does anyone know of plans for a half-A control line model that uses an electric ducted fan?

Dave, both Hip Pocket Aeronautics and Outerzone have a 20" wingspan Harrier jet that uses an electric ducted fan. It can be either set up for RTP (round the pole, i.e. flown with a stick and single line to plane with no other control in a circle, or by standard control line.

It has an option to install a vane in the exit thrust airstream of the ducted unit, to provide vectored thrust. If coupled with the elevator, could provide action similar to ailerons.

Good luck.

Several on Outerzone for 1/2A that could be converted to electric:

As a stunter?  Or just to fly around flat and level?

As a stunter.  Thanks for some ideas.

I suspect you'd be disappointed in electric fans for stunting -- but it should be great for going in a circle fast.

I've been thinking of getting a larger RC ARF and converting it to 'lectric, just to get the complete package that Just Works so that I could go from there.  Then, when I knew what was what, rip the fans out and build something from scratch.  You could do the same thing with a smaller model -- figure out the ins and outs with something you don't mind demolishing, then build a nice one from the pieces.

Not long ago, someone was stunting with a pulse jet powered stunter. I was amazed at how well the power level was matched to the size and characteristics of the stunt plane.

Thinking outside the box, :! don't see why an electric ducted fan model couldn't perform the envelope, if properly matching its thrust to airframe. Perhaps something like the Jetco Saber stunter scaled down to half-A size and with ducted fan integrated to the fuselage just behind the wing?  D>K

Personally I like bigger planes, so I'd do something like a Skyray 35 with A-10-style nacells behind the wing and an extended nose to hold the batteries.

Your idea may do a better job of aligning the thrust with the CG - in fact, you may want to check out the Fan Trainer full scale. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RFB_Fantrainer.

As in all things, there are usually no ideal solutions, only compromises. Trying to fit battery and power unit in a manner to make it all work out in half-A size would be a definite challenge.

With the stunting Dynajet, thrust was out the back end and above. I think the OP wasn't interested in a contest quality stunt machine in half-A size, but something of builder's initiative that would be easy to build but a blast to fly.

Anyway, those are my initial thoughts. I haven't even given electric powered flight a thought yet, but that may change as we see our glow power resources dry up. D>K

Most of these would adapt . Saw a F2D on Ebay semi complete , once . One wonderes about the pointy bit , free flight .

Yup.  That's a good part of why -- being lazy -- I'd start with an ARF!  That's all thought out and built.  As long as you can find a home for the bellcrank you're in like Flynn.

Thanks for all the comments.  I think the Deltaceptor idea looks like a possibility.
