3/8"x1"x 18" Maple Motor Mount - source?
« on: May 05, 2019, 06:26:21 PM »
Guys,
I'm trying to find a source for 3/8"x1"x 18" Maple Motor Mounts. I have looked at Brodak and SIG and the deepest they have is 3/4". I need the 1" to be able to drop the tank down about 5/8" to position the tank in line with the rear intake and still have some strength for the nose. Anyone know of a source?

National Balsa has 3/8 x 3 sheets of hard maple if you have a table saw.

I went to a hardwood supplier and got 2 pieces for lees than 1$ each about 1x5x 12
it was in the small pieces bin.

I will machine to size in my table saw.

You could always glue two pieces of 3/8 x 1/2 together to make 3/8 x 1.

Found a block of maple 910 x 29.5 x 225 . in a timbery building depot . A hard bit . Mustve been there since before the war as all the rest isnt
as hard . Found a local bloke with a bench saw / carpentry shop , wholl ' mill ' it .
Will get 5/8 x 1/2 , and 1/2 and 3/8 etc , less than 4 mm loss on his fine blade ,
so cut along the grain and into strips , the 29.5 split in two hopefully will get me thick 1/2 .

Lonnger its been lying around , the better seasoned ( dried ) . Think this may be heart wood , none of the  rest was .

I would be interested in seeing what sort of plane requires 18 inches of extra heavy  motor mount.

Floyd,
The reason for the 1" depth is to allow for the top of the mount past the engine centerline to be dropped down 5/8" to get the tank centerline in line with the NVA on the rear intake McCoy 29 series 20 ignition engine. The 18" length just gives me enough material to mess-up at least one and redo (which I hope not to need) the mounts are only ~ 5" long. This keeps the nose stiff back to the first former at the leading edge.

The easy way is to laminate the hardwood engine mounts.   S?P

Like Matt Spencer commented just go down to a local cabinet making shop.
What you need is likely filling each workers scrap bin.

When I did that line of work we would have happily filled your trunk with free offcuts.

If that works out for you be sure to pass along any extras to your club buddies.
