Title: Guy builds RC plane with home made butane/stungun afterburner
Post by: Ryan Taylor on April 07, 2013, 03:31:39 PM
Something off subject, but still pretty neat.

A Vampire Mk6 modified with a real working EDF afterburner. Powered with butane and ignited with parts from a stun gun.

That's just crazy!

What kids will do for kicks.  Reminds me of some of the things I did growing up. It a wonder I did not lose a eye or worse.  LL~

Well as an aircraft engine fitter and having worked on afterburning engines all I can say about that is...it's quite clever! I suspect he's done a bit of research because that fuel ring he uses is the same principle as in full size and the flameholder is effectively also what's used. Actually I think the neatest part is the way he turns on the butane :). I have to wonder why they didn't have a fire extinguisher handy in the shed though.

Shows that the essence of modelling is still alive and well in the ARF world of today.
This guy had an idea using some every day products, and experimented over a long period of time to produce his result, which is pretty cool.

Well, with the bad guys planning on infesting the skies with 'drones', it's comforting to know we might have something for use in our defense... :o

I think he violated the warrantee on the airplane, EDF unit, stun gun, and butane can. Good job! I want one!

While really impressive it does seem like it produces much additional thrust. Not finding fault just sayin.  Pretty cool really and it shows that some people still want to learn and do which is what modeling has been to me my whole life.

Those fellows are very clever!  I appreciate the Swedish AF markings.  My own 1938 Focke-Wulf 44J was ex-SAF and I restored it with original markings.

(picture of my airplane:  go to www.QRZ.com  enter my ham radio call "K6BSU' in the box.  It takes you to my page).
