Title: Guess who showed up in Harlem GA
Post by: Derek Barry on March 30, 2016, 06:43:47 AM
Pj and his wife Riannon showed up at Dad's house late Monday afternoon. They will be staying at his place for the next couple weeks, minus some short trips around GA to visit some historic cities. (They are heading down to Savannah today)

It was great to catch up with the Rowland's yesterday, even if Pj was giving me a hard time about not having my new plane done.

We plan on taking the Matrix out this weekend, weather permitting, to do some VG testing.  :o

We will need photographic proof of any gaybulators attached to the Matrix!   VD~

Why bother.  You know they don't work. Don't let PJ convince you any differently. He is biased in this matter.   y1 #^

What form of VG's do you have?

Remember, they only work on light planes....... VD~

The Matrix  will be  a good test, and  will be the perfect airplane to  test them on !

I have some that Pj sent me years ago, the same ones he sent you I believe. I would get some from Howard but he is still refusing to make glow in the dark, neon green VGs.

I am not convinced that they do anything but considering that Pj is here, I will do some honest testing. I can prove myself either right or wrong and get Pj to stop pestering me about using them. Win win.

(You will be like me, knowing they work but don't want those things on your plane....it's a constant inner struggle..)

I did something similar with Ted. He gave me - gave me, mind you - one of the prototypes of the hard point handle. I carried it around in my box for months, finally, he asked me to actually try it. I knew it wouldn't make any difference, but, what the heck, I will make him happy, then go back to what I was doing.

Of course, just like everything he told me but I ignored, it worked a treat and I have flown about 2 flights with the cable handle in the last 15 years. And that was hardly the first time something like that happened and in all cases I was dead wrong.

Same story here. For example, it took me years to finally switch to the pipe, despite Gieseke and many others telling me to in 1990. That being said, I didn't see any VGs on your plane last year...

Yes they do, I wrote about it a long time ago in 2011.

No you did not, but then again, Ted did not tell me to try them, so my record remains clean.

Its been great seeing GA. Taking a look around the barrys shop - dispensing non needed advice where possible.

The matrix will soon adorn VGs and will once again allow the owner to fly their plane to its limit.

Im doing the templates for them whilst I'm here, and we will be doing testing this week. After some little golf tournament in Augusta area. Rhi & I are thankful to Dale and Derek and the entire barry clan for having us stay.

Randy - whats the point in flying it without them again ? The plane was flown, trimmed and competition ready. I see no reason it wont improve.

I had the conversation .. if you can improve only 1 % at the pointy end of the comp results that ALOT and If I could bolt something onto my plane to instantly give me %1 higher score I would.

Unfort Im not as a good as a Doug Moon who sees improvement yet still chooses not to take advantage but still take home Nats wins

Hi PJ

Big point flying before, Derek has not flown that plane in a long while, and the weather maybe hot or cool, flying it right before the install, and then after, will graphically show how much whopping improvement they make..or don't make, that is the ONLY way to see the differnce.
That plane is so overweight I expect a big improvement in performance with RTs installed

Question is  why do you NOT want to see the difference ?

How is your vacation going? I hope you guys are having a great time !

Regards
Randy

While on vacation and passing through Sedona, Arizona a few years back, I met a "lady"* that sells vortex generators along with crystal balls.   Perfect for heavy competition at the NATS. *Certified nut case left over from the 60's... LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~ LL~

Do "crystal balls"  make you fly better???

Randy ;D ;D ;D

Certified nut case left over from the 60's

Yup, that's where you get the best VGs.

Randy is absolutely correct PJ and Derek.

When I test new placements, I ALWAYS do a before and after as soon as possible in the same air. Very critical to a correct evaluation.  Sometimes I remove them and refly without to see if I really did feel the difference.

To blindly put them on and fly without a previous baseline determines nothing. Must be a very controlled test.

I thought we were supposed to do it because all the cool people do.

There you go.  Like putting mag wheels on a Chevette, us bottom-feeders should put vortex generators on our Twisters.
