Guess the Plane!

 I jsut acquired this from my dad. Its about 42 yrs old as he says he was 11 when he built it.

That's a Guillow "Trixter Trainer".  Our club (Cholla Choppers of Tucson) has two of them, used to teach newcomers how to fly CL.  Solid balsa wing...easily repaired in the event of the expected sudden contact with the ground.

My dad REFUSES to actually let me own it. So I convonced him to let me revive it! SInce our work schedules are off the wall and his very limited time and budget. I wanted to take over the task to get it in hte air.

 Altho it isnt mine. he has told me that if I can get an engine for it I can learn on it. Well heck diggly this will be my task!

 JUst need to reconstruct the rudder, elevator, lossen them wooden wheels with their solderd ( LMAO) collets, and the wing flaps. FIRST I need to find a set of plans with these parts to do that.

 I plan on keeping hte original scheme my father painted on and jsut on a few coats of clear to reseal the wood and protect the scheme. I could sand it off but its sentimental to me so Ima do my best to keep it.

 Any words of wisdom or tips would be very helpful!!!

The AMA plans service has the "Profile Trixter Trainer" listed. It is AMA plan # 33702 (Pond plan #79F7), cost $9.00. They offer a second copy for half price if you need one to cut up as patterns.

You guys who are familiar with it... is this the correct plane?

I would suggest you build one from plans and keep your Dad's as an example. That way you both will be happy.

Looks like a Profile Trainer III to me. It's also what I learned on. It would do wingovers and loops, but would freak out if you tried to fly inverted (though I did a couple of times). Mine had a K&B Torpedo 35 on it and was red with a white canopy with black outline. I have fond memories of this plane.

  I have plans for the Trixter A-B, which looks very similar. Here are the dimensions.
  Wing span 32", chord 5.5", 3/8ths inch thick and flat bottom airfoil.  Fuselage length 20.5" and 3/4ths inch thick.
  The belcrank mount and line guide appears the same location as those in your picture.  Plans show a K & B green head Torpedo 19 installed.

How's a II different from a III or a Trixter Trainer?

They are different sizes and minor outline appearance.  I think I have the II still in kit form.  Now talk about an ARC.  All parts cut to size and shaped.  Just glue and paint.

Here are some dimensions for a Guillow #3.  Span 35, Chord 6 5/8, flap is @ 1 in. at fuselage and tapers to a point. Tail span is 15 1/2, width 5 in at center, 4 in at tips, stab and elevator same shape. rudder is 3 1/2 high.

As someone said above sort of inverted flight. If you did it just right you could get it back rightside up with out splatting it in. Clean mud off and straighten prop, do it again!

That is a Guillows Trainer III or if smaller than the 35? span then is a II.

  The fuselage construction looks very much like a UK Keil Kraft Champ. I know KK "lifted" many US designs, I wonder if the fuselage construction was such an instance?

Many moons ago I had a friend who was not a very good flyer but was a beautiful builder, although his planes did tend to go to the heavy to very heavy side.  He decided he was going to learn to fly inverted and got one of these trainers and installed ribs on the lower surface of the flat plank wing and covered it to make a symetrical airfoil.  The thing was painted with enough coats of Aero gloss orange dope that you could use it for a mirror.  It must have weighed 55 of 60 oz with a McCoy Redhead 35.  You know the $5.95 ones.  Never did learn inverted flight.  Wonder why?
