This plane use to sit in Down town Memphis. Under the shell in the picture below. As you can see in the photo it is open on the sides and was exposed to the outside air. It was out of the sun and rain, but cold and hot air along with birds that would use it for a roost and nesting that cause damage. The group that owned it tried to raise enough money to build a building at another location but was unsuccessful. The plane has been moved to Dayton and is still in need of repair.

For many of the younger crowd, it is difficult for them to realize just what kind of sacrificies those young men had to make over 60 years ago!

This country can never fully thank those veterans of WWII enough.  AND all the others who contributed to the war effort.  It is truly the sacrifice that all our men and women who have served in War Times that have allowed us to live in the greatest country to ever exist.

Unfortunately it is the ignorance of too many today that may lead to the demise of our great country.  The freedoms that so many fought and died for are allowing too many today to lead our country down the wrong paths.  We are in more trouble that we realize.

It is still hard to imagine how many young men went down in those old war birds.  A lot of them were not even old enough to drink.  If things keep going as it is I will probably be required to speak Mexican as a true friend of mine says it.  He came from Spain and give up his citizenship to become an American and learned to speak our language.  I even had the pleasure of helping this young man with the test questions he had to learn.  Some of it I did not even know.  Now I will get off the soap box.  The movie called "Memphis Belle" still thrill me to watch it.  Later,  DOC Holliday

PS:Now the disclaimer,  If I upset anyone it is because I think anyone wanting to live in this country should be legal and learn the language.  jeh

Hi Doc,

Unfortunately, way too many people in this country are only interested in making more and more money.  GREED.  Why else do you think just about EVERY product in our stores have Spanish as well as English labels??????

For generations, am immigrant had to become an American, not the other way around.  They had to learn the language, learn the history, become an American!

Now in an effort to sell even more products, every company is putting Spanish translations on the products.  It would be an amazing occurrence if these concessions were NOT being done.  The ability to speak English would develop rapidly as it has done for immigrants in generations past.  Am I picking on the Spanish people??  No, we have done this ourselves.  It is not their fault that we are making life so much easier than just the living conditions which are vastly improved from their homeland.

I never remember OUR National Anthem being sung in French, Italian, German, Belgian, Swiss, etc., etc., in the past.  But, it is a very real possibility that it happens, before long, that OUR National Anthem will be sung in Spanish...................  A travesty!

This is only a part of the message I wrote above.  We ARE in more trouble than far too many realize.

I do not necessarily want to kick everyone out, just make them do what everyone else in our Great Country had to do........... become a full fledged American Citizen!  That, to me, is not too much to ask.

This is typical of the Eight Air Force Missions in 1943.   June 1943. The 388th Bomb Group left England on its Fourth mission since arriving in England. The group had lost its first B-17 the day before. They where apprehensive but they where also eager. When the group and the other groups where over the Frisian Islands they where attacked by fighters. One of the bombers in this large formation of planes was # 42308. The radio operator was killed during these attacks. The control system was damaged but they decided to continue on the mission. The mission was to Hannover Germany. The target was a rubber works. This was the deepest penetration of Germany at that time. They continued on and where attacked by Flak and fighters off and on as they headed in. The ship was not hit until they had released their bombs. Once the bombs where gone the bombers picked up speed. However 308 did not as the number 2 engine was out and the prop was wind milling. #308 is now a straggler. The plane made it to near the coast but finally with another engine out and more dead on board and all the ammo gone they had to bail out. Five men managed to get out. The others where already dead or would die in the crash that followed. All five men where captured and where POW for the duration. End

This is from two members of the crew of #308. Both have since passed on.  This is something i will never forget. My uncle was one of the dead.

More likey about twenty years.  The voting demographics are rapidly changing and it wont be long before our entire constitution and probably country is anexed to Mexico.
There are major problems ahead. In about fifteen years when the baby boomers are all retired who is going to pay into the tax base to keep the social programs going?

The following link is a must see for anyone interested in the future of our country

My dad was in the second day landings at OMAHA beach, then ended up in Prague at the conclusion.  He stayed in the service and was assigned to Germany in 1950.  He wasn't too happy about that since he had no use for the German people, having seen what they condoned for those years.  Sort of the way the muslims condone suicide bombings.

As far as speaking Spanish.  IF we give in to the media and liberal pols hype it will happen.  But right now we outnumber the illegals 20-30 to one.  Something about this country being founded on "Majority rule" comes to mind.  A good indication of how it can go is the totally underwhelming May 1 protests that happened this year.  Seems like "they" realized they were not the mainstream of thought in the USA and better keep their spanish demands and Mexican flags to themselves.

And BTW, it really ticks me off that I have to press "1" for English.

Howard,

Can't believe anyone in their right mind would build a B17 for a Stunt Ship or for that matter help someone do it.  It just isn't a sensible thing to do.  One engine is enough trouble and two is twice the trouble.  I think it goes up exponentially from there.  What were you and PW thinking anyway.

Now a Bellanca 28-92 Trimotor would certainly be more sensible.  I just happen to have scale drawings sitting next to me as we speak.  It is a great looking Golden Age long distance racer.  It even has cowls like a Nobler.  Some Day!

When I was a kid, we used to go over to the Armory in Memphis and play on, under and around the 'belle.  Even though I always thought it was so cool, it wasn't until I was older that the plane meant anything to me.
