Great News From John Miller!
« on: September 16, 2013, 04:41:48 PM »
Well, it's official.  John notified me that my Spirit Of Saginaw III  (SS III) profile will be kitted by Brodak in the future.  Plans will also be available.  John has been working on the CAD file of this plane and it really looks good.  The plane will be Nostalgia 30 legal.  I feel so very fortunate to have this finally come to pass.

I have the plans.  never got around to building it cuz of the trike landing gears in the wing.  Are they going to do the trike gear in the wing?

The kit will be like the original plane with wing gear.  As much as I flew that model on many different surfaces, I never had a problem with the wing gear.

That photo is compressed right to left.  The plane is longer and much sleeker and graceful looking than that.

That photo is some sort of cartoon image, certainly not Dicks plane!
Here's a snapshot I took "back in the day" of his Free Spirit which, I believe, to be a full bodied variant of his Saginaw III model.
Very "Midwest" looking and a good example of that period.

Hi Dick,

This IS good news for us all.  I am very happy to hear that "Big John" has recovered enough to be able to do his "work" in CAD.

It is also good news that another "stunt" model will be kitted.  Hopefully CLPA, and C/L flying in general, will have a steady increase in participants.  I don't know that it will ever reach the numbers again such as were involved in the '50s-'60s, but a steady growth will maintain the events after us "older" geezers are flying on the perfect circles.

Yes you guys are correct the plane looks much better than that picture.  I copied that picture from the Flying Models Web site.  One of the reasons I bought the plans was because how sleek it looks.  One of these said I will learn how to cut ribs and when I do I will build it.  Unless John offers a wing kit then my problems will be solved.

On another note, is the Spirit of Saginaw III classic legal?  Would be great if it is.

For those who want to see what the SS lll plans look like, here they are, in a reduced size. I was unable to change the line weights to match the reduced plot sized, so the lines may appear too heavy in some places.

An additional comment. The trike gear shown will work great in nearly any field. Usually, if the plane balks because of the high grass, it will just as often balk with 2 wheels. The added smoothness in take offs, and landing with usually better take off and landing points awarded, makes a lot of difference. Planes designed to perform as trike geared designs will often require additional nose weight when converted to 2 wheel gear. Think carefully if you desire to change from the designs proven  gear.

Cheers

John Miller

Yes, that is the Free Spirit which I flew and qualified with at the '73 NATS.  It was a new plane that I finished in the motel in Oshkosh.  I have never seen that pic before.  I only have one photo of that plane.  Les, is that from the '73 NATS or the '74 King Orange?

Dick,
More than likely from the King Orange.
(I have no photos from the Oshkosh Nats)
