Title: Gratitude
Post by: Larry Cunningham on June 21, 2006, 01:14:12 PM
Hello All,

After 27 days in the hospital, I'm finally home
again! (And it took me only one day to get my DSL
working again..) So, here I am, I have to express
my gratitude for all the outpouring of love and
support during the last month. Everyone has been
so kind and wonderful, I'm greatly moved just to
think about it. God bless you all.

What I had was a MRSA infection in my right ankle,
which had started to leak into my bloodstream, so
that I had a condition commonly called 'sepsis',
which is essentially blood poisoning. It had
actually been developing for a couple of months,
we understand now, and the Cipro and other
antibiotics I had been taking were partially
masking the effects. Serious stuff, I never
realized how serious until the 2 weeks before
Memorial Day, I really got sick and started having
tremendous pain in my foot..

Thank God for my doctors, and all the great
medical people who tended me, and thank God for
modern antibiotics! They hit me with Vencomicin at
first and have settled on ZOSYN now, which I
continue to get every 8 hours at home for another
month (I self-administer it). It has made a
tremendous difference in my life!

I had two surgeries on my foot, and the last one
left me with what is called an "external fixator",
which is an assembly of large titanium horseshoes
and bolts around my right leg. These a held
together with special bolts, (everything is
special about it..) and there are little
assemblies which have "pins", which are both
bycycle spoke sized wires and fairly large
diameter (say 1/8") bolts, all driven into my
femur, the large lower leg bone. And also to my
ankle assembly, the purpose of this all is ankle
fusion, which should occur in about 10-12 weeks.
Meanwhile I am supposed to absolutely minimize my
weight bearing on it, so I do everything left
footed and from the wheel chair. I'm set up in my
garage with special living quarters which
accommodate my special needs.

I also have a wonderful little machine called a
Wound Vac, which is essentially a vacuum cleaner
that collects fluids from open wounds, and helps
healing times tremendously.

That's essentially my whole story, with more
details than most would care to know. I'm on my
long road to recovery, but at least I'm on it!
I'll be home about 2 weeks before I resume any
serious work.

Again, my heatfelt thanks to everyone's kindness
to Gail and me during this difficult period.

L.
