Graphics, lettering, etc. (Help needed)
« on: October 13, 2010, 07:54:01 PM »
Since I know nothing about computer graphics, is there someone who does custom work for a reasonable price?  I would like to do something nicer than stick-on numbers and letters.  I really liked Howard's " Paul Walker's Impact", for example.  No, I'm not doing an Impact.

I'm kinda partial to Derek Barry's work... he's excellent and did my lettering and graphics paint masks for my Starfire.

Check CLC's website. I'm not sure if Jim Snelson does these himself, or has somebody else who does. There are several model airplane graphics providers, but I'm fresh out of url's...computer glitch got them all.

If you know what you want to do, you should be able to take paper patterns or drawings to most sign shops and get masks cut. Be sure to ask for mask material...lowest sticky type. I'm not sure how to use them, but I'd suspect the Windex technique would work to locate them, then clean the Windex residue with Naptha, and spray on the dope or other paints.  H^^ Steve

Bill Fulmer - Created some custom vinyl graphics for my Hooters Ringmaster and they were good and relatively inexpensive. grafix01@cox.net    http://www.customcutgrafix.com/

Secret revealed: CLC does not farm out their stencil business. They are done in-house by Jim's talented wife Emily. Good folks, great results.  8)

Our own Louis Rankin does custom Grafix also. Very reasonable. Dis them for my SDR and those letters are 11 inches tall.  LL~

Another vote for Derek's work.  His stencils are very nice and he uses a good low tack vinyl.  They made doing the numbers and letters on my new plane a snap.

I think I'm looking for vinyl - I had never heard of a paint mask, but I am planning to cover a wing with film.  I do have a just - finished fabric and dope wing, though.  Will vinyl work on that or do I have to spray it?

Russell,....

I have used Kirby's Kustom Vinyl Graphics for years!!  Dennis Kirby can cut anything you want for your plane; lettering, numbers, designs, logos, ect...  He has quite an extensive library of logos and designs on file.  And he is willing to custom design anything you want.  He can work from a computer generated digital file or a pencil sketch on the back of a napkin, ha!

He has done graphics for all my R/C planes, my control line planes and even my flight box!! The vinyl graphics stick excellent to plastic film coverings.  If you're using tissue and dope the graphics can be applied before the clear coat and then start by misting the clear coat on a little at a time over the vinyl.

Here are some of the graphics Dennis has done for me.

You can reach him at:

Hope that helps.
