Title: Grandson's First CL Flight
Post by: Joe Ed Pederson on July 06, 2021, 10:14:27 AM
Our grandson, Aedan (12 yrs old), had his first CL flight on Saturday, July 3rd.  His Father, our son, Kenneth, launched the 1/2A Skyray and I had my hand over Aedan's the first few laps, then I sat down and he flew out the tank (Golden Bee).  I had to steady him the last few laps as he was getting dizzy.  I had told him not to be disappointed if he crashed, but I think having learned from RC to make small, smooth movements of the controls helped him out.

The model has been ready for two years, but they live 4 hours away, and the little time we have with them is usually filled with other activities (to compete against) and bad weather.  We only got in one flight because the weekend of the 4th of July is always Aedan's (July 8th) and his brother Noah's (July 4th) birthday party with their cousins there and fireworks, and, and, and.

Kenneth and Ellen have four boys.  Noah is 9, so he's next at the handle, Killian is 6 and Silas is 4.   They live in the country with a small control line field right behind the house.

Hopefully, I'll be able to attach a photo of the event.   Edit: I can't seem to get the picture down to the required after a couple of attempts. Second edit:  Finally got the picture figured out.

Happy Grandpa: Joe Ed Pederson

Hey 4 is not too young if the lad shows an interest.  My son flew the tank out on his first flight at 5 years of age.  Wayne Meriwether was winning trophies at 4 years of age.  If a youngster shows an interest age will not stop them.   Glad to hear you grand kids are showing an interest. H^^

Hello John,

These are the same boys I brought up to the fun-fly in Kansas City a few years ago when you gave me the Francherized Twister.

As the oldest, Aeden often teaches his brothers how to do what he has learned how to do.   So, I may be surprised the next time we get to see them.

After the flight, Aeden said it was more fun than flying radio control and that he wanted to build a model.  Quite encouraging!

I love the old school Sullivan red fuel blub.  I didn't know they were still available.    ;D

John,

I got the Sullivan fuel bulb from Brodak.  It is at the bottom page 91 in Catalog #22.  The order number is SU-171 for the 8 oz (gas) bulb, SU-177 for the 6 oz bulb, and SU-178 for the 8 oz bulb.

Yeah, I bought it partly out of nostalgia.  We used those when I was a teenager (about 1970).  I still have my original, but as you would expect it had turned to gum inside.

I'm finally "up-town" now and have my official Jim Lee 5 oz fuel syringe that I use on my "big" models.

You are a lucky man.  My grandson just turned 10.  He wants to fly but I am putting that off till he is about 12.  I know from my youth that a full size stunter in the hands of a 10 year old is not a good idea.  He shows no interest in 1/2a.  Wierd.

Ken, put that young lad on profile plane like a Ringmaster with him helping you build it or any of the profile ships available.  Use a handle that you can cut the throw down on and not too bulky for him.  You may be surprised once he gets the feel of it.   My son did not like stunt planes and liked to go fast and that is why we raced a lot.  1/2A mouse and .15 good year.
