I would like to hear your thoughts on a proper Classic model for a Johnson Stunt Supreme ??  This is my first contact with this engine (thanks, Ed!), all ideas will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Bill when I was knee high to a grasshopper I had my SS in a Fox/Berkley Falcon 35.  A Hi Johnson Stuka or Kenhi Cougar or Panther would be right there too.

Heavy engine ...

Uhhhh...compared to what?  Mine weighs just a scratch over 7 oz.
It should work just fine in any of the classic airplanes up to about 580SQ in wing area and 45 oz.

You can use it in any of the classic planes that were originally designed for a 35. Thunderbirds, smoothie, nobler, Hi Johnson stuka, any of them. I have a Johnson in a Hi Johnson Stuka, has a 58" wing span that pulls thru the pattern easley. If your at Brodaks you can watch it fly. Johnson engines easy start, easy running engines with great durability. I have never used a muffler on one so you may want to see what happens if you go that way. I use Y&O 10-5 props for great results, not 10-6s.

Only bit of info I can offer is do not put it in a Skylark. The Skylark (any version) needs a really strong engine. Wouldn't try to guess as to why (thick wing maybe) but have ran across many Skylark owners over the years that condemned the airplane when all they needed was more engine. I have a ST 51 in my 46 version, originally started with a ST 46 and it wasn't quite enough. It's great with the 51.

Any one of the "Nobler" clones should work fine.

Well I seem to remember a gentleman that had a Skylark by Sterling that was powered with the first Johnson Stunt Supreme engine.   At the time I was into rat racing and combat so didn't get details of his set up.  The combination was clocked at almost 90 mph,  yes I said 90 mph.   The judges had a hard time getting his score written down.   I don't know if Randy Cuberly remembers him or not as it was during that period of time.  I too had a Skylark by Sterling later that was powered with my trusty Fox .35 stunt.  I think it is still hanging in Darrell Palmers basement.

Someone may be thinking of the Johnson Sport Special which was a very mild engine for its size.  I think it checked out to be a .32.

Another plane that might do the trick is the Thunderbird II that Palmer designed and won the NATS with.

The thing about the Tucker Special is that it's such a beautiful design, it really should not be messed up with any complex graphics. KISS.  :) Steve

Hi Steve,

I saved a picture of one of the originals from the NATS.  It's an orangish red with yellow trim, IIRC.  I often just copy an original scheme for a Classic model.

Hi Dave,

I have a Cougar short kit from RSM and an original Midwest Panther kit.  I guess one of those would be the easiest for me to get done!

Go with the cougar, you will like the combination. If the SS is broken in, it will not leave you hanging on a very hot date and great restarts.

Bill Claire Sieverling had a few designs in the era that would work.  I remember a Mustang and a Sundancer or Sundowner. I think this latter is on EBay plans section right now.  The Feno maybe,  I think Jim Aaron has one.  That Cougar is a looker though to me.

Bill the motor you got from me was in a AAsr for two years and the next three years in a  Curtiss Swift. It won Old time stunt at the KOI five years in a row. I used a small Tatone Peacepipe on it.
Here it is at Tifton many moons ago.Won that one also. >:D

Hi Eddy,

Yep, the .35 I got from you is a good one.  The one I am talking about is one I picked up since then with only "SS" in a circle under the exhaust port.  It feels like it is in great shape!

The Johnson SS I bought was described as a 'Stunt Supreme.' It was a .32 displacement, and one of the few "dimensionally challenged" big shaft Johnsons you may have heard of. I never got it broken in enough to run a clean stunt flight... Stopped VERY hot in less time, on Fox Superfuel! Shaft clearance seemed the probable cause.

The small-shaft Johnsons, basically Orwicks, ran fine, strong and easy. (Memories from a 17 year old at the time..)

I DID fly a (no special version) Johnson 35 at a Mirror Meet, as an AMA Senior, in a kit Magician with minimal mods (tri-gear specifically.) I'm blessed with a mental block about score and placing.... First model I flew over 100mph was a Quicker with another (no special version) Johnson 35 on Missile Mist, I think. With U-Reelys, line length was approximate by +/- 10% or more, actual speed could have been quite different. A thrill, though...

The Johnson engines with the SS stamp are big case 35s with 6.5-1 compression designed for a good 4-2 break. The Johnsons with no markings was a going out of business cheap sport engine only good for entry level profile.

Not exactly true. I have 3 Stunt Supreme with no marking. One way to tell without disassembling the engine is in the cut of the venturi. SS engines have slanted venturi and the Sport Special is flat. Internally the cranks are way different.

Well mine weighs 7.1 oz on my electronic scale.  Not worth arguing about anyway!  It's light enough for any of the Classic airplanes!

Common nowadays is to throw a muffled engine on these classic airplanes.  That is much worse than an unmuffled classic era motor as to weight.  Even then they would add huge amounts of lead sometimes to compensate for the super wide handle spacing of the day.  This got me thinking.....I will put my SS in the green box Nobler kit I have.  More go than a Fox and about the same weight more or less as a McCoy, OS 'S' or Enya.  No mufflers.

Bill,
That Cougar short kit you have is from the version as kitted by Midwest.  It has a much thicker wing than the original and would be a great match for your Johnson SS.
