Got it fugued out!
« on: June 29, 2009, 06:54:22 AM »
Have you ever noticed if you go to some web sites they don't work? It takes forever to get pictures to load?

Well its the IT guys fault. I know quite a few of these guys and they are all the same. "Lets make it secure" well as it turns out its so secure no one can view stuff. I am not picking on any one particular web site its most of them in general. Our whole society has become secure. Time to get back to the way it was.

Three can keep secrete if two are dead.

Then again, remember Isky's site?  Constant queries about Krylon paint, how to fix or tune a Honda, how to repair a truck diesel, info on model submarines, getting chewed out because some of our modeling terms are used with a different meaning by perverts.

...Well, that did supply a bit of humor.  ;D

Robert, I wish we could back up time to the way it was but I am afraid those days are gone forever. There are some really nice people in this hobby. Many I never met that I feel I could trust completely. Unfortunately there are a few that would rather do what they can to hurt others. If they would spend half the effort to better themselves instead of trying to hurt others and their accomplishments, they could obtain what they are after. Sadly there are a few in this hobby and we will just have to live with them. We can't go back.

One other aspect of the "Usability" question is that some websites are written so they can only be viewed with a specific browser; i.e., Internet Explorer (usually). Have you ever tried downloading bug fixes or patches from Microsoft using FireFox or Safari? ? ?

Yea, you'd think the place I work was the NSA. It's so secure it's hard to get the required work done.

Ever notice that IT services are suppose to support the work of the people in a company actually making the money but it's usually the other way around?

You guys wouldn't like me as your IT guy...No wallpaper, no screen savers, no games, no local user rights to install junk on the PC,no changing the company approved IE home page, no tool bars, no Instant messengers, no personal email, no personal web surfing on your lunch hour, all input sources are locked down so no floppy, CD, USB access, no no no no no! Breaking these rules are grounds for dismissal at most big firms these days. All web surfing is logged and checked randomly to see who's doing what. Just do your WORK on the pc, it's not a toy (when you are at work). The bosses love me, the worker bee's...well... you know...not so much. Tough! I run a tight ship and things run smooooothly.  VD~

Yea, we got most of that. But they have it so locked down that it's tough to actually do the work assigned. That's apart from the fact that most of these guys aren't allowed to actually do anything that might improve production. The head IT guy insists on doing all the programming himself (and the guy's brain is operating in the 1980s). Heck, he kludged up a hack to allow us access (sort of) to a TERMINAL program for entering text. A TERMINAL program! Hard to get across to these dwebs that we're the ones making money for the company. they are SUPPORT SERVICES! They are supposed to support us, not the other way around. We have to VPN into the company because keyring and 256 bit encryption isn't secure enough.

OK, rant over. Those guys just @#$% me off. They have all the time in the world to make security tighter and the system more user unfriendly, but not enough to fix stuff that is broken or come up with reasonable data entry programs. Sheesh! I @#$% them off when I bring my own laptop to work and tap their wireless for internet access. Being a modest hacker has it perks  ;D

For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!

Programming is not a fit occupation for a human being. It's been demonstrated time and time again.

Hardware design. Now THERE's a profession! ;->

Larry,

I think this falls under my Ol' Dad's saying: It's impossible to successfully legislate morality. But that doesn't stop the idiots from trying.

I too am a IT guy and all it takes is one stupid user to muck up the entire network and I am talking around the world for our company. When that happens it takes a whole weekend to fix his 3 second download of a virus. And I would rather be out burning fuel and flying then cleaning up his mistake. HB~>

So just like everything else, it take one stupid user to screw it up for the rest of the users. So don't beat on your IT guy, go beat on that dumba$$ in the next cube from you. Or better yet go find the guy that is releasing the virus and open up a can of wupass on him. ~~>

'Cept, POGO originally said, "We have met the enemy and THEY is us." I believe the one you quoted was later said by POGO, but more for environmentalists.
