Title: Good source for carbon vail?
Post by: Donald R Olson on July 02, 2023, 06:22:33 PM
In the past I have used .5 oz fiber glass to cover my planes. I had a bunch of it, so I’ve been stuck in the 60’s. Now I’ve used most of it up and what’s left is a pain to try to smooth out. So, I thought I’d go with carbon vail. I wonder if anyone would have a good source. I did look for prior posts on the subject but didn’t really see any current info. Also is there much difference applying it. I usually get the resin very thinly coated by rolling paper towel over and over the glass. I assume the same technique will work with carbon vail. Thanks in advance for you assistance.

i purchased here, and apply with dope only, the resin will add a lot of unnecessary weight
finished with 2 part primer hardly used any filler
https://www.cstsales.com/
they have several thickness and lenghts

This is what Bene also recommended for me to build his P-51 kit.  But this carbon veil was not so good back when I got it, a bunch of tiny holes formed all over the places and they were impossible to fill. Have this happened to you?

Dave Fitzgerald recommend this other source for composite materials and their carbon veil, as everything else, is top notch:

Martin
p.s. that is an awesome HellCat you have built!

Soller Composites (https://sollercompositesllc.com) typically has the best prices in the US for CF fabrics. Unfortunately, they no longer stock CF veil. Apparently, the Kevlar veil has become more popular(not sure if it's significantly better for our purposes though). They stock the 1/2oz kevlar veil which may work for your needs as well.
