Title: Good GOLLY!
Post by: Steve Helmick on May 05, 2014, 05:24:37 PM
Was lucky enough to be out in the driveway, early this afternoon, unloading some gardening supplies from the truck, when I heard an unfamiliar (and kinda crappy!) aerial rumbling approaching. Walking out into the cul de sac a wee bit, I was able to see the source...a 1:1 scale B-17 in rather glossy olive drab. I couldn't see if it said "909" on the nose, but maybe...

Judging from the location of my house, it is very possible that it had taken off from Renton Airport, which Ted Fancher knows intimately. I can't recall ever seeing a 1:1 scale B-17 in flight before, certainly not so close! I recall very well when a P-51 flew over, many years ago, about the same flight path...it was said to be making a mock straffing run on Renton Airport for a movie shoot. We need more of that! Anybody local know what was going on with this B-17 fly-by?  ;D Steve

Only $150?  Wow.  Arizona Wing's B-17,  "Sentimental Journey", costs a LOT more than that.  Although it's been several years, the cost was $395 at the time.  Probably more than that by now - - and worth every penny!

Collings Foundation's "Nine-O-Nine" is scheduled to be in California this week, who knows, maybe they took the scenic route. :)

Edit: Here's your animal, "Memphis Belle" is scheduled to be in Renton...

"Got an extra 450 clams in your pocket?"

Uh, no! Besides, I don't think I could climb into one of those, unless they have an improved method now?

Maybe I could afford to give them a frozen turkey to put aboard, symbolic of the ones they put aboard their B-17's when Dad flew over to England during W2, Nov. 1943? The story was that the English cooks almost got lynched for boiling all those turkeys.   S?P  Steve

We see a B-17 giving rides here every year, July 19 & 20 this summer -

Also a TBF Avenger ... great air show!

Dennis

PS: If you wanna talk to Aces, this is the air show to attend.  Or chat with Richard Cole, Jimmie Doolittle's co-pilot on the April 1942 mission flown from the aircraft carrier Hornet.  He's the oldest surviving member of the raid ...

909 was at the Lakefront Airport, New Orleans about 2 months ago.  My Dad was B-17 bombardier, 33 missions.  It was a big chunk of change but I just had to do it.  Soon as they lifted off we were given thumbs up to unbuckle.  I made it into bombardier's position before we got to 500ft.  My favorite position was looking out the top turret, you could see the whole plane, 360° view.

That's awesome Allan, something you'll never regret doing, and a memory to last a lifetime. Also, your contribution helps keep "Nine-O-Nine" in the air, where it belongs for others to see and cherish. As far as Warbirds go I've got the C-47, Stearman, BT-13, AT-6 and P-51 checked off my list but I've got to get up in a "Fort" myself sometime. The B-25 is still on my list too. "FIFI" would be incredible as well, but mega $$$.  y1

How can that be annoying?   I love to have them fly over my place any time.  But, then again I have seen a B-24 fly over one day many years ago.

The weekly local newspaper (aka "The Weekly Wipe") arrived Friday and had a nice article about the visiting B-17..."Memphis Belle", FYI. It was a movie star, but apparently never dropped a bomb. The wife said I should go for a ride in it for my birthday present. I said it is $450 for a ride. Maybe she said I should go fly a kite. I'm not real sure, I seldom listen to her ranting.  LL~ Steve
