Title: Golden State Stunt Championships
Post by: Howard Rush on September 06, 2010, 05:30:59 PM
This is the West Coast's premier all-stunt contest and your last chance of the season to see the Jive Combat Team in stunt action. Evolving details are at http://aeromaniacs.com/ .

If you plan to attend, it will help a lot if you register in advance.  That way we'll have time to get you entered into the computer and get your score sheets printed before you get called to fly.

Thanks for taking on the CD job.

Rich Walbridge and I are co-CDs.  He's doing most of the work.  Doug Barton, Uncle Jimby, Jerry Silver, Heman Lee, and some other folks are doing the rest of the work.

Hi guys,

If you need more than just two days to fly, the PC Flyers in Fresno are opening up their field for practice on Friday. We have opened up our field the last couple of years and I want to thank all the different fliers that has come and played with us. We're a chartered club and if you go to AMA under chartered club you can see a picture of our field and see all the great places we have surrounding us. Last year we offer for those that had campers or motor homes to dry camp until Sunday Morning around six in the morning. We have a lot of parking and last year we opened up four circles to play in and yes we can open up more circles if needed. Our famous cook (Brian Massey) even cooked tube steaks for our company. We had a great time and thanks to Jimmy and all of the rest of the group that showed up. We're a church group and would love to have ya join us flying on Friday. I'm sure Rich will fill ya in with anything you want to know, if ya don't want to bother Rich you can e-mail me, (andersongl44@yahoo.com) and I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about our site.

Thank You

Yup, this is a friendly town and a high-class operation.  We'll also have the usual banquet Saturday evening with an interesting program.  Alas, we may not have the traditional Address by the National Champion this year.  Don, please bring back the F-86.

Gilroy is a nice place, and a little more scenic to get to from here. Here are some places a little closer to the contest:

Hampton Inn & Suites, 327 East Fir Avenue, Fresno, (559) 447-5900, hamptoninn.com
La Quinta Inn & Suites, 330 East Fir Avenue, Fresno, (559)  449-0928‎, http://www.lq.com/lq/index.jsp?iata=99020724&WT.srch=1&sissr=1
Comfort Suites, 102 E. Herndon Avenue, Fresno, (559) 435-5650, comfortsuites.com
Holiday Inn Express, 7115 N Howard St., Fresno, (559) 577-1350, holidayinnexpress.com‎
Rodeway Inn, 6730 North Blackstone Avenue, Fresno, (559) 431-3557, rodewayinn.com
Best Western Clovis Cole, 415 Clovis Ave, Clovis, (559) 299-1547, bestwesterncalifornia.com

Looking for hotels in Google Maps was sorta interesting.  People try to game those searches, so you get links to would-be middlemen and several nonexistent hotels.  The Clovis Cole, the traditional place to stay, is a bit far from the new contest venue.  Last year we stayed at the HI Express, which was nice and new.

Yes; I'll be cooking the free Hot Dog lunch again this year. I'll be running back and forth between practicing and cooking so I apologize in advance if your "dog" taste a little like castor oil.  LL~ LL~ LL~

Last year we had between 15 and 20 for the day of practice, and they kept the 3 circles going. But, there is sure room for more!

I'll be sending in my registration when I get back from this trip. Sure is a drag having to spend 3 weeks in Aspen.  n~ n~

Brian

PS to Doc; The drive is a breeze!!! Come on Down!

Hi Steve,

Like Howard said, the Holiday Inn Express is new and nice. I stay there and I think it is a good hotel for the low AAA price of $100/ night. Includes a decent breakfast and internet access in your room. If I remember correctly it is only about a 10 min. easy drive to the contest site. I think all the other hotels on the list go for around the same price.

There is a nice Motel Super 8 in North Fresno for $70/night. It is about 13 miles from the contest site. I don't think there are any less expensive motels in the area.

I hope you can make it, we all enjoy your good sense of humor. :-)

Regards,  H^^

One should beware of Steve's sense of humor.  He continually lobs puns over my head.  I get a few.

Steve, ask PW where he's staying.  Shal is resourceful about finding him good deals.  Of the places listed, I think Rodeway is the cheapest.  Even if you aren't an AAA or AARP member, ax for the senior discount. It's usually the same.

Wish I still had the F-86, it really did fly quite well. Alas, it didn't do too well when the engine quit at the top of the circle! Not sure I would be up to doing another one at this age. With luck I will see ya'll at the Golden State meet.

Steve,

I've stayed at the University Inn in Clovis the last few years.  I just checked and the rate was $63 per nite plus tax.  It's not the closest but only about 10 min drive to the field.  Internet and continental breakfast included.  They have a website.  I just googled University Inn, Clovis CA and found it.  It is about as cheap as any that I'd stay in.

Gary Anderson extends his People's Church practice invitation above to Thursday, also.  Here are directions from Google Maps for getting there from northbound 99:
17.   Take exit 131 to merge onto CA-41 N toward Yosemite   8.6 mi
18.   Take exit 134 for Herndon Ave   0.2 mi
19.   Turn right at E Herndon Ave 1.6 mi
20.   Turn left at N Cedar Ave 0.2 m
Destination will be on the right

Those coming from the north can find their own way to Herndon or go to Bakersfield, do a U-turn, and follow the above.

Here's a piece Gary sent me.  I omitted his and Brian's email addresses and phone numbers to keep them out of villains' hands.  Ask me and I'll send them to you.

"The Golden State Contest is being held on October 23 and 24Th. The PC Flyers Club in Fresno, CA is opening up their field for practice on Thursday, October 21 and Friday October 22 from 8am to 5pm.
1. Please let us know which days you would like to attend.
2. We apply all AMA rules
3. We require a pull test before first flight by AMA rules.
4. We plan on opening up three circles.
5. Our Famous Cook (Brian Massey) is going to cook tube steaks both days.(Bring your own drinks, water, soda, no alcohol please.
6. Dry camping is available Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday need to vacate by 6AM. We have limited spaces for dry camping, if you want a spot, please e-mail Gary Anderson to reserve a spot.
7. PC Flyers Club isn't connected with the Golden State Contest. We're just trying to make convenient for those that would like to have more flying time in our great area.
8. Fee to fly at PC Flyers Field, no charge just AMA requirements.

Normally I would consider a trade but since I live in Oregon, and he buys my Martini "juice" for me in California, I would be cutting off my nose to spite my... well you know.  And, although, he can't accommodate all he would like, he has agreed to cook "dogs" for all who join him and his club at the practice field in Fresno.  I will meet you there.  You can refer to the Gary Anderson note above.

See Ya,

Hi Howard,

I heard a rumor that preregistration was going to get extra points on their score card?????? Also there is only room for three in intermediate class, so Brian will be first, Ronnie will be second and yes! yes!!!! that leaves third for me. Finally, finally I won't end up last!!!!! Hey!!!!!! if there was only three places I would still be last, Ah Crap?????? I also heard that you are going to sign each preregistration score card????? Wow!!!! that might be worth a lot of dough??????

Hey???? I'm just kidding, just wondering how preregistration is going?????? I'm sure there will be a million fliers at this contest, cause its the biggest show in good old California!!!!! (Howard you did get my money order, didn't ya?????) Gary

I checked the hotel list again, and even hit "refresh". They're all still in Gilroy. Somebody might be PO'd if they made a reservation at a hotel in Gilroy and found out on a late Friday arrival in Clovis that Gilroy was 121.74 miles away.  mw~ Steve

Hi Howard,

(WARNING NOT FOR KIDS OR WIFE TO READ)

Had a nice group at the field today,(Sunday) talked about the up coming practice fly at our field. Have you heard anything about anyone wanting to dry camp at our field for the contest??? If ya google our field you would see we have plenty of room for those that would like to dry camp, just need them to let me know, so I can get a spot set up for them!!! I believe the contest is going to be showing up in about three weeks!!! Funny how time gets away, I hope to see a large group playing at our field. Our field is about 4 or 5 miles from the contest and easy to get there from our field. If ya bring your kids there is a place across the street that has a lot of video game and I'm sure the kids would like to drain ya of all your change. Bring your wife cause across the street is several restaurants that the wife would like ya to take her too and treat her the way she should be treated. If ya haven't pre-entered better hurry up cause if ya don't, might miss the biggest show in Fresno, CA, Gary

Jerry Silver just called and reminded me to announce that the Saturday evening banquet is back at the Clovis Senior Center, 850 4th St, and will be catered as before by Outlaw's BBQ.  We'll have a great program, too, plus pretty airplanes to look at during appearance judging.

Banquet is $20 per person plus beverages. We need a tentative headcount by the 19th, so if you haven't already sent me your banquet intentions with your preentry, please send me an email note.

Looks like good weather for the GSSC  y1  y1  y1  Daytime temps in the mid 70 to low 80 range, with nighttime temps in the low 50's. The days will be partly cloudy with a 10% chance of rain Thursday through Sunday; 10% . . . usually that means DRY!

Should be awesome flying weather!

I just received news that the entire West Coast Varsity will be at the Golden State Stunt Championships.  Two World Champions will duke it out with Capt. Fancher and the reclusive Mr. Buck for the trophies, while the Jive Combat Team takes on all comers for the JV championships.  The banquet alone, with a multi(2)media 2010 World Championships Lowdown, will be worth the trip.

It's too late to mail in your entry, but if you plan to come, please email me the entry sheet data, http://aeromaniacs.com/public/Events/GoldenStateReg2010.pdf if you can.  We'll still be delighted to accept your entry until 9:00 the morning of your event.

Hi Guys,

We had a nice day here in Fresno, only three people, from out of town, showed up at the PC Flyers Field today. We had great weather and I'm sure we'll have several more tomorrow. The lawn is cut down for good flying but our famous cook had to make everyone feel at home, so he show everyone how soft the ground is??? He'll have the plane back in the air tomorrow. We learned that the lawn may be soft but the planes are softer, so if ya hit the ground please bring glue and maybe a crying towel. Come join us and have some fun, the three that showed up is Mike M., John w., and the one and only Steve H. Looking forward to see ya at our field.
