Golden State Stunt Championships on Live TV
« on: October 18, 2012, 11:44:21 PM »
This morning a hardy bunch of flyers made it out the Madera (CA) airport for some free live TV coverage of the GSSC. I had written a press release and sent it out to various local TV and Newspaper outlets. Lo and behold our local Fox affiliate picked it up and gave us some free airtime. They put us on live on their morning show; 5am till 10am. During that time they broke from the station 7 times to go live to us. We talked about C/L models, CLPA, and the GSSC.

When I got home and watched the recording, I was amazed how much air time it was, and how much they plugged the contest, our club and the church that sponsors us. What a great deal.

Here are two pics: from L to R standing in pic one are: Paul Swan (broken wing), Chuck Milsap, Clayton (the on air personality), Fred Staley, Norm Gayer. Then kneeling; Mike Massey, Ryan the camera man, Rob Nelson and Bob Swan. Pic two is the same except Mike is replaced by me.

In our last live segment I gave Clayton his first training flight with our club trainer. It was really funny having him hold the handle in his right hand and the microphone in his left so he could talk on air, all the time while circling with him. All in all it was a great experience, and I hope, a boost to the GSSC. Oh yes, after the on air stuff ended, we gave Ryan his first training flight too. They both seemed to really enjoy the experience.

The only bad part of this . . . we had to be at the airport at 4:30am!! YIKES!

Great for you guys.   Years ago when my son was mucho younger, he made front page on local Topeka paper.   Used to get some TV coverage also.

TV coverage of a stunt contest sure beats the usual fare: hours and hours of political attack ads and nonsensical "debates".

Hopefully they will interview me this weekend some time, and I can make it as nonsensical as necessary!

Actually I have been on TV about 4-5 times now for model airplanes. One bunch wanted to put powder on my head to cut down the glare.

That's very neet to see yourself on TV isin't it?

No problem with the glare; we can use the chalk powder marking the circles.

Thanks Paul; I hadn't seen it on the website. I'll make sure the other club members see it.

By the way (BTW) the little paper airplane you saw pass in front of the camera at the end was the handy work of Ryan, the cameraman. He put that together on site just goofing around; he was quite a character. All in all it was a great experience; except I look pretty bad on TV.

Brett: does this mean that your head is shining in the sunlight?  Are you getting bald?  Say it isn't so!
