My .63 cal Tower Pistol with a 350 gr. ball and 55 gr. of FFg is a great deterrent! At .615 dia. the ball is "pre-expanded". That is backed by a 45 ACP, a 40 S & W, a .357 Mag, a 38 Special, a 32 S & W, and assorted rifles up to .375 Ruger and 4000 foot pounds of muzzle energy .45-70 #3 Ruger. Plus some shotguns. My Ruger Old Army is also in the mix. A person can not be "too prepared".

Not really worried about burglars as much as worried about certain politicians. SHE won't get mine easily. The news reports would be impressed with the number of rounds of ammo in stock here, but to me, it's barely adequate. I was running low on .22LR, but not anymore. Those really add up fast!

I read that birdshot is a better option than OO Buckshot...it makes more of a mess/mush of the recipient, vs. a few neat holes that are more repairable. Plus, you might contend that you used to go pheasant or quail hunting, while OO Buck is widely known to be used only for home defense and shows intent. Regardless, if you have to shoot somebody, you can count on LE confiscating your weapon. Don't count on ever getting it back...maybe in 3 years, IF it doesn't disappear from the evidence locker. So you might not want to use one that can't be easily replaced or has sentimental meaning.  Steve

Very nice! A 40 grain load with 1/2oz. of shot is a load for children! I am shooting 55 grains with a ball that weighs .80 oz. If I was going to use shot which would probably be preferable in the house I would throw 3/4 oz. of #7 1/2.
When I had my FFL I recommended a 12 Ga. for home defense with #7 1/2 skeet or trap loads. The shotgun rounds will not over penetrate in the house and are lethal. A solid body shot will possibly be fatal due to shock, the wound is so massive the target will probably die of blood loss before they can ever be brought to a hospital. Even if they get to a hospital I don't know if that much damage can be repaired. If you are forced to shoot someone in your house always double tap them. If they are still moving shoot them again! If they are moving they are still a threat! The object is for you and your family to come out of the situation without injuries.

while I totally agree with your thoughts as far as the 12 guage, there are so many home invasions any more that I carry from get up to lie down and the 12, while wonderfully devastating, isn't practical to have in the recliner with you, or the kitchen during meals, or...see my point?  My Glock is with me 24/7 - literally.
even at my bedside.  Now THAT is where the 12 is wonderfully effective and I plan to get one yet this winter.
The key for that, no matter what you carry for home defense, is staying current.  Shoot every week, and do it well.

The problem for me is finding a place to shoot at reasonable prices, and less than an hours driving distance.

Went to a local (actually named "A Place to Shoot") range a few months ago with a nephew from out of state, and was shocked by the prices! They wanted $85, and we had to pay extra (per box) to use my own ammo!

I declined their offer, as I had used that range years ago, and didn't like their cable supported target hangers. Trying to target shoot at constantly moving targets (disturbed by their vent fans) was frustrating.

It was tough for a while here, too, to find a usable range.  Finally, I found a sportsman's club for a hundred bucks a year and no restrictions.  Made me feel rich when I stumbled on to it! It's just three miles from me.  We just moved here a little under three years ago, so it was a good move for more reasons than I thought!  I understand what you're up against, it is really frustrating.

I really prefer to go find a stump to shoot at, someplace out in the boonies. The Renton Rod & Gun Club is worth consideration. I don't like indoor ranges. There's always some idjit that rents a .454 Cassull and buys a box of ammo to shoot up. The concussion is horrible. That's why I like to shoot .38's in my .357. Last time, I shot up some .38 SHORTS that I found in my Dad's old stuff. It must have been 60 years old, kinda crusty but still went bang. I didn't even know there was such a thing...never seen it listed on Cheaper Than Dirt's website, or at Cabela's or Sportsman's Warehouse locally.  Steve

I belong to our local Isaac Walton League.  They maintain a nice target range nearby.  Dues total $150/year.  I only get to use the range during summer, when the temperatures are decent enough to keep me (sort of) warm.

Ours are all outdoor ranges as well, and I still like to bundle up and go run 60 to 100 rounds through fairly often.  Not nearly as much fun, but livable most of the time.  Wow, .38 shorts?  I never knew of them either.
I can't imagine the nasties of an indoor range with our strong calibers these days, I'll take vanilla.

Joining was about $300 last I checked, but they have everything there with all shooting position covered, and a 22 caliber indoor range.

I used to reload for every centerfire caliber I owned (25 ACP, 9mm Luger, 9mm Makarov, 38 Special, 357mag, 45 ACP, 45 Colt, and 223 Remington). Loved reloading all my ammo, but living in a Condo put an end to making that kind of noise.

There is a multitude of 38 caliber ammo listed in "Cartridges of the World", and likely many more added since my old 9th Edition was printed about 20 years ago.

I guess I'm lucky Bill. The range is 3 miles from our home. $90 a year covers myself, wife and both kids. Guests are $10 a day. 12yd to 100yd ranges plus a shotgun area. I meet the retired guys on Wed mornings almost weekly for some .22 plinking and a little gambling. lol

Hahahaha! Tony, mine are crustier than yours! Some wouldn't slide into the cylinder of my Ruger GP-100. I need to Scotchbrite the corrosion off and give them a spritz of WD-40 or LPS-1.  Steve

Looks like a Henry.  My favorite 22 ever.  (Mine is the blued one.)  I have my own indoor range for 22 handgun.  I built a bullet trap that I have in my shop where we shoot 30 feet.  Hey. better than nothing.

Your correct about the range, and I would greatly appreciate any invitations to shoot there again.

Used to shoot there regularly with a late friend of mine. He would always call me when he got a new gun, and insist that I shoot it first. Asked him why he did that, and he said I don't shoot as well as you do, and want to see how well the gun shoots. That way I can't blame any poor groups on the gun! 

Jim had a tendency to flinch in anticipation of recoil, and was never able to correct that reaction. He also made, and sold absolutely beautiful black powder rifles, so I got to shoot a few of those - without having to clean them myself.
