Guy's where do you get your plug igniters? I want something that is not made in chine, prefer U S A product.
Where sis you get yours and how do you like it? Does it fit the plug ok as some from ch8na do not..

As stated...the RCATS system is a bit pricey.... and I still have power panel and hand held methods...BUT RCATS it the best IMO

The McDaniel unit will last a longtime. and pocket size, but doesn't take a deep pocket to afford... I wouldn't get the one with the meter... They don't seem to work for me and I normally can't see it anyway...

For the past 20+ years I have used the McDaniel's Ni Starters with excellent results. They have recently introduced a 300 ma mp hour jobby which lasts many hours of flying fun. They have a robust warranty service which is amazingly generous! You call them up explain your situation and return your used item. They replaced mine and returned it very promptly and at very favorable prices. No need to spend more and maybe get less service! Great people to deal with and they are in the USA!

+1 for the McDaniel Ni-Starter (Sonic Tronics Inc.). Plus, they are 20% off thru 1/1/18. Like Jim said, I wouldn't bother with the meter unless it's on a corded unit. While it seems a good idea, mine didn't function through the first flying session. It lights plugs fine, though.

I've used and liked the Dubro ignitors, simply because the battery (sub-C) can be easily replaced at the field, or upgraded to much higher battery capacity, by unscrewing the housing and dumping out the deflated battery and installing one that's been charged. They are not "push & twist", but I like them. I've used these since the late '90's and have three. I would NOT suggest NiMH batteries...tried one. The NiMH won't hold a charge as long as NiCads, which will probably still be ok come May '18. D>K Steve

I make my own from discarded Sub-C NiCd cells out of cordless drills and such tools. When a battery pack goes bad, it is usually only one cell that prevents a proper charge.

I've used the McDaniel/SonicTronics igniters for years. As Phil said, the new one is terrific with NiMH battery. I've not had a problem with the metered version.They are a local company for me. They make everything right there. Fine people to deal with. Funny thing is I'll be driving by their place tomorrow to get my van serviced around the corner!

I've used the McDaniel/SonicTronics igniters for years. As Phil said, the new one is terrific with NiMH battery.
Agreed, the new version has three important changes from the original - the clamp part is much sturdier, the battery is NiMH instead of NiCAD and much higher capacity, and probably most important, there is no longer a sliding contact for the center post. Used to, there were telescoping brass tubes, the inner with the wire from the positive terminal soldered to it, and the outer, which moves with the spring-loaded center post contact. The inner contact made a sliding contact with the outer, so the current path has got this sliding contact of relatively high resistance, and could change when it got dirty/oily/corroded, and as you shook it, sometimes losing contact entirely. The new ones have a wire connected directly to the center terminal, coiled around to take up the movement, so the resistance is effectively zero all the time and doesn't care if its dirty or shaking. That's why it glows brighter and more consistently.
One issue - you don't want to use the old-style NiCAD charger with the new battery, you need the new charger to properly charge it. I think the old one gave about 100 mA and the new one is 300 mA ( I will check tonight). If you keep using the old one, the battery will still charge, but it will take much longer and it will never entirely charge, because at some point the 100 mA drops to nearly zero as the terminal voltage approaches the supply. The new charger drops from 300 (or whatever) to 250 or so, because the voltage of the battery never gets near the supply voltage under load.
The failure mode of the battery is also different - when new, the battery can sit for months in your toolbox without charging and still be fine. Eventually, like it fell off a cliff, the self-discharge will go up and it won't retain a charge for more than a few days even without use. It will still work but you will have to charge it every day before use. You don't want to charge the new ones every day or before every flying session, because it will overcharge them, only charge it when it is clearly depleted.
