GloBee Stinger Charger Instructions
« on: October 08, 2022, 10:59:31 PM »

What's the chances that some one has the instructions for a GloBee Stinger 1/2A starter? I happened across the starter complete with charger but no paper work. The Charger has 4.4volt output at 140mah I do believe.

What is the safe charge time for these? It's charging 2 , 2 volt , 2.5ah Cyclon D cell lead acid batteries. I bought new batteries and put the charger on for a few hours and the charger got pretty warm. The charger output is higher than some for 12 volt sealed lead acid batteries wall chargers I have seen. I'm thinking the charge time shouldn't be too long??

   Thanks in advance,

2.5 Ah =2500 mAh           2500/140 =16.4 hrs. Add a bit for inefficiency and you get about 20 hours. A pair of 2 volt batteries in series is 4 volts, so a 4.4 volt charger is reasonable. Measuring charger output without a load on the charger is misleading. Measure the voltage while the batteries are hooked up and charging. That starter would probably work fine on a single cell lipo!

Thanks for the feedback Bill. I could find other Stingers on line for sale but no paper work or instruction. When I found the starter, I started to think about possibly trying a different battery type. There were two things to consider. One was fitting inside the starter body, that is one of the unique features of the starter. The other is that the starter would sit a lot between uses. I felt that using a lipo might not be a good idea for that reason. I was thinking of a two cell lipo for the extra voltage to spin Norvels, and there wasn't a whole lot of choices at the hobby shop in that respect, and they were expensive! Taking the battery out between uses wasn't appealing because you have to take 4 screws out to get the body apart to access the battery. I tried three AA dry cells connected in series, as being disposable wasn't objectionable and they are pretty cheap and would last a while. But when I tested the little pack, it just didn't spin the motor ( a typical Mabuchi 540 or 550 motor ) with any authority. I finally settled on just replacing the Cyclon 2 volt batteries with new ones, and I can just leave them in there with no worries. I probably should have waited until next flying season but nothing is getting cheaper, and what is on the shelf now would still be on the shelf next spring, so I popped for them now. I'll have to check what the charger voltage is under load some time down the line. I have to take the starter apart for that. Thanks again for the info.

3 AA dry cells probably couldn't supply the motor with enough current to start an engine.

Dan,
The manufacturer (or re-retailer) also markets a charger for that battery...or they did several years ago. I'm looking for one because I have one of these starters, and also want to cut the cord.

While I'm not looking for documentation, I am looking to get mine working. Whatever I do, I'll try to document it here, or email you directly.

Thanks Jim. I got this mainly for the nostalgia. I have been flying a bit more 1/2a lately just for giggles and grins. I have a Astro-Flite 1/2A starter and a Sullivan Hornet starter. Both are chorded and have triggers that way too sensitive, I think. I was going to look into some sort of lipo pack or Nickle metal pack to attach one of those to, but just never got around to the project. The Stinger kind of fell on my lap. It was complete with the charger and all was in great shape like it had never been used. We are headed into a period of rainy weather (which we need and I just had my yard aerated and seeded today!!) and hope to give it a good test this weekend. It doesn't turn the well run Norvel as good as it does the TeeDee and Medallion engines, but T wasn't trying to actually start the engines.  It may still be good enough for the Norvel.

  Thanks again,
