 Hey Guy's I'm looking for a "D" cell sized rechargeable glo driver that hook's up to a Du Bro type recharger.
  I prefer a "D" cell, but if I have to settle for a "C" cell I will.
 The one I have looks like maybe an "A" cell type and it is beginning to not hold a charge as long as it should.

Hi Gil,

I bought a "project box" (plastic case, metal bottom) at Radio Shack, a couple Nicads, some banana clips, and a headlock with leads.  It hooks to the normal chargers and will last for a LONG, LONG time between charges.  It isn't as *convenient* as the self contained plug ons but it is strong!

HI Gil, I don't off hand, but Radio Shack has a display of these "boxes".  I did have to drill the holes in one end of the box to put in the connectors, but that, and soldering the nicads together was all the real *work* necessary.  I have mine so that I can disconnect the clip when it goes in the box.  You can get the sockets to mount in the end of the box for the banana clips to plug into.  Pretty cheap and you get to choose the size and milliamp rating of the batteries!

For everyday use I have a McDaniel R/C / Sonictronics metered ni-starter.  When I'm flying fairly often it'll go a month or so without recharging.  My field box has a 12v gel cell and a power panel also, but my real backup battery is a plastic battery box for 4 d-cells from Radio Shack, rewired to put the circuit in parallel instead of series.  I made a cardboard box cover to keep it nice and clean.  With 4 Energizer D cells you can hook it up to a new Fox 35 on the test stand and crank on it till it finally fires and it's not discharged.  I put it together about 2 years ago and it's still going strong.  If it dies a recharge is as close as the nearest grocery, drug store, super store, the emergency flashlight in the backseat, etc.  It also lights up a glow plug as bright as the sun.  The only downside is the weight.

We use the D size Nicad and just solder the dubro twistloc or whatever wires right to the battery.  I use large shrink tubing over the wole thing--some guys just wrap it with black tape.  Keep the wiring as short as you can work with.

If you can find a D cell with solder tabs--that is good.

Wear a face shield whenever soldering to battery cells--use as little heat as possible.  If in doubt, use a battery holder or box like Bills.

Most readily-available NiCad "D" Cells are "C" Cells in a "D" case. You can get the real thing at Batteries+.

I sell the  Glow driver  twist lock type ,that is a  screw off , and you can put in any C size battery you like, ni cad rechargable, nickle metal hydride  rechargeable, or just plain old alkaline or the new lithium, all of these  last a  very long time.  There is  NO soldering  the base screws in half and you drop in the new or recharged  battey.
I have not tried to recharge with a Du Bro unit but it will fit the  Glow driver with no problem
the are  8.99 each
these  take  a   FULL SIZE  C  battery   not  the  little  sub C of teh other  type

Hey guys, this is my setup i've been using all summer. Box from Radio Shack, 2 aa rechargeable camera batteries. Works great, keep a 4 pack on the charger all the time and just change out every couple of days. Ray

The usual "Glo Ignitors" are sub-C...a bit smaller. The last one I got (just to have one with a meter and not the same color as all the others) is an Associated R/C car unit (stem is too long, but it's a minor inconvenience). I loaned it to Mike Conners at the last contest, and we could hear the glowplug sizzling like a steak on a hot frying pan. It came with a NIMH battery, which I have much better sympatico  with than NiCads. You can charge them anytime, regardless of how 'full' the battery is. "Top it up"...sure death for a NiCad...no problem for the NIMH. It is said that they don't hold their charge as long if left alone, but I can deal with it. 

My tool kit has a 12v. gell cell to run a starter, just in case. The power panel has a glowplug looking thingy that is a charging station for a "Glo Ignitor". Seems to work quite well. A half hour seems to do the trick.  Steve

I have been making starting batteries from leftovers for a long time. In ancient times, I bought 6 D cell batteries for $.10 ea and wired them in paralell. It made a hot battery that lasted a season. Now I make NiCad starting batteries from cells taken from disgarded NiCad power packs from electric drills or surplus sources. The most surprizing ones are from the Black & Decker battery pack. At dead short, theese tiny cells put out 30 amps. More than enough to glow the plug bright orange. I have a universal charger set up so I can vary the charge rate to suit any battery.

Always the tightwad, I buy a 1.97 lantern battery at Wally's place and rewire it to make a 1 1/2 volt battery. Plenty of amps available and it last for a long time.

Tower sells a couple glo-starters with a meter built in in the $15 range.  They are C cell version.  They also have one with a D size case, but no meter.

When I first came back to CL, I bought one of the "c" cell ignitors for alkaline batteries. The case was as big as a D cell, which I found objectionable. But with the now easy to get NIMH batteries, it'd be killer. I wonder where it is... Steve

Im here to tellyou the coolest ignitor I have seen (um hottest maybe?) Pat has one of the RCATS solid state ignitors, Im on the list for one. they are kinda expensive but reportedly charge it once a year and use it.
