I have been intrigued by C.V. Russo's Gigantis flapless stunter since I was a kid. I believe it was published in Flying Models in 1962. Wondering how it flies. Has anyone built or flown one?
-
HI Jim,
I have only seen a small picture of the plans in Tom Morris's/PAMPA Classic book. Neat looking model, and I *believe* it had a fairly high aspect ratio wing.
Sorry!

Yes, that is the plane. I still have the magazine with the original article. Just wondering if it would be worth the time to build it.

Flying Models August, 1960. Is there any other C/L planes in that issue?
Thanks!

No other CL planes. There is a Sopwith SE5A single channel RC, Starduster free flight , and my favorite "Insect-O-Fliers", insect powered indoor free flight. Built a bunch of those but I'm sure it's not very PC nowadays.

That is one cool looking classic design. It is a low (not high) aspect ratio wing planform, with a reasonably thick airfoil. Flapless airplanes work fine, although they may give up a little at the pinnacle of the competition ranks. The leading edge is a little sharper than I'd like, but not a deal breaker.
I hope sombody builds one.

Send me the plans and I will build it just for VSC. LL~ LL~ LL~ I vaguely remember the design and remember thinking about ordering the plans. But, back then I did not fly stunt and just grauated high school. Was also trying to get into the military at the time.

I think Walter Umland should do a survey.

Sorry to jump in here but I was thinking...
if I had a full size tiff file that someone could
email to me I could do a set of parts (not kit)
for anyone that wanted parts.

I have the plan as a PDF. Don't know the scale. If/when I decide to built it I plan to trace it in AutoCad so I can cut it on the laser. When I'm done you can have the files.

You could always go ahead and send the file to Walter so that those who would like to build one don't have to wait for "If/when" to maybe or maybe not to happen.

Anyone who feels like using or cleaning up the plan can download it from the link that I posted.

thanks for adding that link; I didn't see the link till you mentioned it.
Here's some doodling after downloading and sizing it

Outerzone has a pretty good selection of all sorts of plans. Searching for "stunt" found 143 entries, but I'm not sure that is all. If you have a design name in mind, type it into the search box on the Home page to see if it is there.
The Hippocket aeronautics Plans Gallery is another good source but requires registration for downloading or uploading. Browsing works fine without registration too.
Both sites are quite conscious of copyrights and have occasionally removed or suspended plans when the status of a plan was in doubt. I recall Pat Johnston has given Outerzone permission to keep at least one of his plans available.

Hey Walter I would go for a set of parts and the plans.
-
I would also go for a set of parts if your are going to cut them. Would save me a lot of CAD and laser time.

here's a little more doodling around...

Nice! I noticed that formers 1, 2, 3 & 4 and other parts are missing on the original plans. Shouldn't be too hard to work them out. And according to the article, there are ply rib reinforcements on ribs 1, 2 & 3. I think they are just rectangular but not very clear. The structure is very light. At 52 1/2 inch span and a Johnson 35, the article original says the original only weighed 32 1/2 oz.

added the doublers (top view) a nose wheel mount, an eng. and the tail

I've got a set of plans for this one that I got a few years ago, I think from Larry Scarinzi. If you do this one Walter, count me in. y1

That will look great with my LA46 for power. Then again I might have my electric by then. H^^
-
Looking great Walter. You may really expedite my building this.
Here's a scan of the original article for those who are interested. No copyright issues with posting, I checked.
-
This is a really cool plane, finally something other than the same 'ol same 'ol.
What year/issue is the article in FM?
I'm already thinking of some 60's era military schemes for this one... ;D

The Outerzone site (where Walter got the plan scan) says: Flying Models, September 1960

getting closer

I see you changed the orientation with the nose pointing left. That's the only way I've ever drawn them. I don't know if I could build a plane with the drawing the other way around. LOL Wondering how many CAD hours it's taking you so far?

Walter,
Just curious, what are you basing your leadout position on?

front LO is off original plan then spaced back LO for modern ALO guide
actual placement will be up to the builder

10-4.
Any decisions yet on what's gonna happen with this one?
-
NOt sure yet but would have to know who/how many would be interested
I'll have do a post for that later.
