Getting back into flying after 22 year layoff!!
« on: June 02, 2012, 04:46:33 PM »
Hello everyone! I am trying to get back into CL stunt after a 22 year layoff. (Got married had some kids, you know the story) I used to fly a couple times a week back in the 80's. Unfortunatly I no longer have any of my tools for building anymore, BUT I hear there are some really good ARF's out there. I am looking for something that I wont get bored with after I "Knock the rust off" But I also dont want to spend a fortune either. Something in a 40 size I think? What do you guys think? Im in southern Cal right by a beautiful permanent RC airport and control line field called Whittier Narrows. So if anyone out there has something they want to part with to get me back in the air please let me know.
Thanks guys!!!!
Mike

I can't suggest a plane, because I'm still at the "information receiving" stage.  But -- do you know about Brodak?

Everything control line...

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

You probably won't go too wrong with a Brodak profile Pathfinder or P-40B.
OS LA 46 would go fine with that ( LA 40 or FP 40 probably too).

Thinking profile in case something funny happens and you need to make a new fuselage.

What do you guys think of that idea?

What about the Brodak Cardinal ARF or ARC? Thoughts?

The Cardinal is a good idea too. The ARF's were out of stock when I checked the web site but they ARC is available.

In my opinion you will want a 45 class power (OS LA 46) on the Cardinal not 40.

Hi Michael...This just might be what you are looking for...I've never flown one, but haven't heard many negative comments about it. I've seen several and they look as good as any ARF I've seen. I'm not endorsing or advertising a product, guys...Just trying to help a "way-ward contoliner."

As stated earlier, you live near one of the nationally known sites.   Check with the people that are flying there.  I would imagine someone will have something just collecting dust.   I myself just last weekend in Topeka gave away a Shameless in need of tender loving rebuild and a ARF Oriental that needs flying.  So good luck on your search for a plane. Thanks guys!! this site is awsome! I was digging throught the rafters in my garage last night hopeing to find some of my old stuff, and to my delight hidding in the corner was one of my old profiles just sitting there!! Its been there 12 years (That is when we bought this house) I musty have put it there during the move and forgot about it. I dont even remember what it is. it has a old FOX 35 on her. I have pics but I do not know how to upload them. If I can get them on hear maybe someone will recognize what plane it is.

Sounds like you are real close to a bunch of control line pilots.
If you subscribe to control line world there is a good artical on building a F/A Twister. It is a quick building plane that will get you going quick. Build it light and that Fox 35 will haul it.

Posting pictures is even easier. Click on additional options in a post and browse to you photo. Picture has to be under 1mb.

And welcome back and also glad you found us here at the Hangar.

Click on that and it should take you to your computers folders go to were your pictures are when you find the one you want click on open and it should Attach. Then click on post. piece of cake

Welcome back Mike! I flew at Whittier Narrows back in the 60's till about 72 when my kids had me going in different directions. 36 years later I got back into it and am having a ball. Moved to the Central CA area back in '92 so haven't flown the Narrows since.

When you're ready to upgrade the Fox, I heartly recommend going to an OS LA 46. Inexpensive (as motors go), reliable and dang good! You should be able to pick up lots of flying/info buddies at the Narrows and Sepulveda Basin.

Hey Michael; I strongly suggest an ARF Vector with an OS LA 46. I have the ARC version (modified to open canopy) and it flies great. It will take you all the way to "Expert" if you should want to go that route.

Larry,

I have been flying S-1 Ringmasters with Fox .35 stunt engines/4 ounce Perfect tank and 10/6 Top Flite (paddle design) prop since 1955.  I currently have 28 Fox .35 stunt engines in my engine collection (almost every variation from sandcast to the 50th anniversary model) and have always had at least one or more of this combination ready to fly (1955-2012).  Yes, I have seen the burp on the outside maneuvers on occasion but has been a rare experience and has never been a problem for me.  I still recommend this old, but proven combination for the weekend fun flier, especially after a few years out of the hobby.  This combination is a real classic.    y1    D>K    H^^

I'd go with a Sig Skyray with an FP.20. The combination may not be a real classic, but it sure as hell flies better

Larry, thanks for the advice.
I am building a box stock Skyray 35 now, as we speak.  It will be powered by an FP20.  If I ever get it finished and tested, I will let you know how it performs.  y1   H^^

I can tell you right now, its gonna perform great. Make sure you run the FP with an APC 9x4 prop.
Most will not agree with me but mine flew better with .012 lines, 58 feet as I recall.
