« on: August 01, 2024, 06:23:42 AM »
How long of a drive from Muncie to the Air Force museum? It’s been a while since my last visit.

Be sure to remember that it closes at 5 pm.  9am to 5pm.  Don't leave Muncie at 3pm like we did one year.

The museum also takes the better part of an entire day to get through. It’s incredible!

The first time I flew a control line plane was in the common area of the base housing on Wright field.  I just did a google map and it hasn't changed.  That was 1958 and the housing was old then!  The runway was still active then but about all that ever landed there were DC-6's and some 7's.  Lots of hush hush stuff went on there.  My little brother was in Air Force Intelligence (an Oxymoron of the first order) and stationed there just after they finished the first parts of the museum.  He gave me a tour and Wow.  It was awesome even then.  Bit of nostalgia as well.  The F-105 and F-4E were both tail numbers I had worked on in SEA.
If I ever make it back to that part of the world I will dedicate an entire day to the place.

It will be worth the trip and also remember it can't be done in one day.  Also check time zones. D>K

The Nats, World Cup, and World Champs together in the USA is rare event.

While I haven't been to the NATS, my recollection is that Wright Field is a fair bit to the far side of Dayton, Ohio, so while the AMA site is on the good side of Muncie, Wright Field is still where it was last time I was there, in 1946, when I was one year old. Battling through or going around Dayton to Fairborn will take an extra hour or more over the 1.5 hours that Google Maps suggests for a simple Muncie > Dayton.

I would be interested in knowing what is required to get into the base to visit the museum. There's a museum at Fort Lewis that pretty much isn't possible to visit since 9/11/2001 (truck traffic entering the base used to backup onto I-5), the museum at Edwards AFB is impossible for most civilians, and China Lake NWTC just moved the museum off base a few years ago to make it possible and not a nutso hassle.  D>K Steve

Just went last Friday. Easy drive from Muncie to WPAFM
No worries. 1 hr 45 minute time.
No issue with security. Drive right up to parking lot and walk on. No admission charge.
A must do!
