Gene Schaffer's Stunt Machine
« on: May 23, 2020, 06:50:02 AM »
                                                           Gene Schaffer’s Stunt Machine

Tom Dixon announces availability of the plans and kits for Gene Schaffer’s famous twin rudder design from 1971.  Many thanks to Warren Tiahrt for providing his sketches and notes taken from measuring Gene’s actual model.  (See May/June 2016 Stunt News for details on the history of this design.) It has long been known that the plans presented in Flying Models are inaccurate in may ways.  This one is correct.

For prices and additional information, please go to the Classified section or to the Vendor's Corner for all of the details.

Gene caught me playing with the controls on his Stunt Machine at Flushing Meadows. He stood there with his hands on his hips looking at me, and asked"what are doing"? I told him I was checking out his controls. He said, "see these others guys, there not going to win anything because their controls are no good". He then told me, "this is way they got to be."  God bless him.

What gives me the idea that someone I know is building a Stunt Machine?   Walter   is Marshal building one?

The Stunt Machine is a favorite.  Here's me with the Stunt Machine I built from Flying Models plans at the 73 Nats in Oshkosh, the first year I was old enough to fly in Senior.  OS35s and a Foam Flite wing from Arnie Stott as Bob Hunt mentioned above.  Arnie's place was only 30 miles from home.  Also pictured is stunt flyer Jerry Caldwell and his son Cass, who obviously won something.  Great memories.

Anybody who has talked to Albert King about playing the blues and has wiggled the controls of Gene Schaffer’s Stunt Machine has lived a full life.

I saw Albert King open for Jim Morrison & the Doors in Seattle June 1970..... I would have liked to see him again.

I have Walter Umland's Stunt Machine kit under my bench. I was waiting for Bob Hunt to come out with a plan that more closely follows Gene's original before building it.
