Gene Martine's Mariner 1979-80 & 81
« on: April 11, 2006, 12:03:02 PM »
Here are some shots of Gene Martine's Mariner.

The three in the Mariner series that Gene made were for 40 size engines.

The first was Copper (brown in color) and numbers two & three were Tan with Orange &  Black with a reddish pearl that made it appear like a metallic brown and the third was the same as & 2 but with red trim.

The  Copper (brown in color)  one was used in the 1979 Nat's.

The Tan one with black & orange trim received 19 points at the 1980 Nat's and was Concours D`elegance winner for that year. That Mariner was also lost the day after appearance the judging was completed.

Although there have been others since then, Gene's Tan one with black & red trim received 20 points at the 1981 Nat's. Gene's 81 Mariner was the first 20 pointer ever.

also attached are two copies of M.A. articles that had Gene's Mariner in them

I flew that white one and I may still have a few pieces of it.I have the plans also. Sadly I saw it go into the ground at Jacksinville.I think Gene has the stabs from all of them. When I first started back into stunt Gene helped me more than any one elts.I flew several of this planes and he flew mine also. At one point he didn't have any thing finished so he flew my Juno and my SV-11 in contests.

Can anyone believe that Gene sent me an email stating that he was still good looking.

Hi Randy  I will look for them and make you a copy. I got a wing and tail from Gene and built one with a body closer to the Bob Hunt model . I gave the model to Bill Witson in Clearwater Florida around 1992. After he died Phil Baily from Clearwater got it and I believe he flew it in the Jacksonville contest last fall. I won advanced with it at the 1990 or 1991 KOI. I have some pictures somewhere and I will scan them and put them up here in a few days. I think Stan Powell built the wing as it had a enclosed but removable wing gear.

Thanks Ed. I was always intrigued with this plane for some unknown reason.

Here are the photos First is the bronze one and then the white one. If you look closely you will see this is not the same white one as pictired above. This one was built around 1985 and it is the one I flew. Last is mine built in 1986 and flown at the KOI in 1987 not 1990 as stated above.
