GEE BEE "STUNTSTER" finally finished!
« on: April 27, 2009, 02:58:34 PM »
Adapted from Granville Brothers Gee Bee Model "D" Sportster.

Span 53 1/4 inches (Wing plans I used are from the Bordak P-40 kit, modified for a straight leading edge, constant chord, and I rerounded tips to match the Model D shape which has wider ailerons.)  The dihedral was increased to 7/8" each side to compensate for the higher thrust line.  The straight leading edge and change in the aileron size has increased the wing area to about 580 sq in.  I increased the stab/elev area to match the ratio on my Vector 40, which has about the same moments.  Finished the plane weighs right on 50 oz, which gives it about 11.6 oz/sqin loading, or 8.6% of wing area loading. (No expertise here, just following what I read.)  Power is a modified LA46 on 15% with castor added to bring the lube up to 22%.  Gonna start with a 11X5 Pro Zinger and 60ft lines.  I put an adjustable rudder on it and set it for about 1/8" offset with no engine offset yet.  The finish is Brodak dope on the fuseelage and $kote on the flying surfaces.  I used dope over $kote for the wing trim and hope it holds up. I'm waiting for a decent day here in Florida to get a flight in.

Beautiful Phil, I love the panel line / shading and the Blue and White scheme - hope it shows up against that typical blue with white clouds sky down there in FL.

Question ... Are the wheel pants just butted against the wing with a plate to spread the load, or are the firmly attached to the trailing edge?

I have about 10 days off around memorial day, hopefully I can get over to either yours or Rogers circle and try and get the rust out of my wrist by flying. Maybe I'll get to see the Gee Bee flying!

Bill,
Weekday or a weekend day (Saturday preferred) whenever you can spare the time.
I'm sure Phil feels the same.
"Maybe" you will have time to visit both areas ????

Bill,

I put some square plates at the rear of the wheel pants to spread the load and also catch the rib next to it.  I attached them to the landing gear wires with some small blobs of clear silicone hoping that if I get a real hard landing that hey will just come off rather than destroy the wing.  I have not flown it as of yet because the wind has been a problem lately......little too stiff for a maiden flight.

Phil,

That is one very good looking airplane!

Now you have to do a repeat performance with a full bodied version.

Phil:

The Gee Bee looks absolutely great!!!  Will I get to see it fly next week while I am down there?
I will give you a call this weekend to see when you might be available to help me with that non-cl airplane.
