Mini Tourneys
« on: May 10, 2007, 11:18:22 AM »
I have been playing disc golf lately.  I really enjoy it.

DG has what is called a MINI. Mini's are played at local courses every single week. Usually, the tourneys are offset in time and date, so if you hustle you can play three or four minis a week.

A mini is a very casual event, but it is still serious competition, and very fun. Everyone kicks in $10, the winners split half the pot, and the rest goes to course improvements. There is usually an ACE POT, which you can kick in a $5 bill, and the next guy to ACE gets the pot. Sometimes the ACE pot goes for weeks and weeks and keeps building up and can become significant if you win.

Anyway, I was kicking around the idea with Doug of having a Mini every week. Set a time on Saturday morning. Everyone who wants to fly shows up and kicks in $10. The winners split half the pot, and the other half goes to the local club or into a savings account (or something).

Instead of an ACE pot, you could have a ?????.

I was thinking of "all pilots judge" format with 10 point scoring (10 point scoring is easier to add). Drop all the scores but the middle, and that is the score. So, if you have three judges, the low and high scores drop and the middle score stands. If you have an even number of judges, average the two middle, Etc, etc...

One thing that would be cool is DRAW DOUBLES. if you had enough fliers, you would all draw from a hat to be partnered with another flier. So there is some element of luck involved. I was paired with a World Ranked pro one weekend and we shot -11. The next closest person was par!!! We smoked everyone, and I got to get a "W".

Anyway, that was my idea. If a bunch of stoned hippie disc golfers can pull together a MINI every week, I would think the sober CLPA community should be able to also.

Hey, Brad, I think it is a great idea, especially in those places that have a lot of flying sites in the area!

Unfortunately, it's over two hours to the only two dedicated flying sites in NC.........
In your area, the NE, and out West (Cal.), I think it could be done super easy!  Sorta like "the contest every day on the weekends" that used to occur.

Mini's could be on the local soccer field, I suppose.

Randy said they used to this very thing back in the day...

I think it is a great idea and as long as we are talking about using a golf model for mini contests how about handicapping.  OK maybe not such a good idea.  But for thems of us who love to fly and compete but know down deep we will never get a trophy I like the idea of competing agains flyers of my own skill level.  Let the games begin.

Sure, I could see spotting some points!!!

Just keep it fun and agree ahead of time, just like a friendly golf skins game or game of Wolf with you buddies on the weekend.

It has been so long since  I touched a handle, I will probably need a few points myself!!!!
