Gil - there are a number of them out there and as far as I know, they all seem to work well.
I'm pretty sure that Walmart carries them, I know BJs does.
I've seen the Magellan as low as $299.00
Try this website: <http://www.epinions.com/GPS_Devices--reviews--automobile>
Lots of good info.

Walmart just took on a whole bunch of them. All looked portable.

I use a system that uses the map program on a laptop...bigger screen and stuff...about $100 plus the laptop...

I also use a tiny Bluetooth enabled GPS unit and a notebook computer. Also for the much larger screen. The unit I have uses SIRF3 chipset and is much faster obtaining a fix and keeps satellite lock even indoors. It's around $160.00 plus the notebook of course. A suggestion if you want to get a feel for the GPS units. Browse them at Wallmart and then buy the unit online or anywhere except Wallmart. Personally I do not give any of my money to the Wallmart corporation.

I'm using and reccommend the NAVMAN N60i. It's portable, has it's own battery so can be used in or out of a vehicle, plus it also has a built in digital camera. So instead of entering in a location you want to save, you just take a picture of it and next time you want to go there you just select that picture from your picture library. It's a lot easier than entering in an address. It also has a load of other neat features.
Cheers

For the car I have a magellan 3500 it works well, but unless you use it alot you should find a less fetchered one (mine allows for subscription traffic updates). A friend of mine has a Lowrance and it has different fetchers but works very well and it was only $200 at tiger direct.
BUT since I also geocache (do a Google search) I love my hand held Lowrance IFinder.

Has anyone tried the M A P system? It is portable, lightweight, compact and inexpensive. Best of all, its ecofriendly :I.E. when the folds wear out , you simply recycle it and buy a new one at your local gas station for a few bucks. I guess if I had a few hundred bucks to blow, it would probably would go towards something silly like a new plane. **)..H.D.
