I don't know if this is against the rules here, but for anyone who may be interested I just spotted some good stuff on Ebay...
Larry Richards/Veco "Chief" Item #250686597277
Larry Richards/Veco "Tom Tom" Item #330463690046
Top Flite "Hawker Hurricane" Item #350387131614
These appear to be NIB examples.

The "Chief" is NIB. I am the high bidder so far. Could change any minute. LOL

I already have a Dumas Chief kit (got lucky at $35 on the bay) but I did bid on the Tom Tom and won HB~> VD~I ddin't realize how much I needed another hole in my head LL~ LL~ Its on the way, should be a nice kit I suspect. That chief went for good money too and the Hurricane was over $100 when I saw it! wow.
I was also looking at a consolodated TBF Avenger I wish I had been more serious about it as it went for $42.
-
Dennis, you did me a favor when you out-bid me on that Tom Tom!
-
Yea, I think we were both bidding too much n1
You owe me now LL~ LL~ LL~

Either I'm lucky or I have great foresight. I bought most of the Veco kits that Larry made when they were available. Does this mean that I have a slush fund for my retirement?

Dennis, I don't know, the Tom Tom went for $61 and the Chief for more than $90... You know, its a crap shoot on the bay.

Those were bargain prices.

Yes, Ebay is a hit or miss situation. I watched an Umland kit go for more than I paid for the one I got from him. It still irks me when I see smething go for way more than what it is really worth. But, I landed a couple of kits from the UK(short kits). I still remember the old farm auctions, in which my Uncle Conn always told Dad know what you are bidding on. My Uncle was legally blind but knew his animals. H^^

As I drove up after work, in the rain storm, I see a long white priority mail box on my porch....lucky for me its covered!!
Opened it up to find a Beautiful Larry Richards Tom Tom....man for a guy that is used to the wood and cut quality of old Sterling kits, I am speechless, these parts are very nice indeed y1.. Its a keeper..up on the stack it goes...but gee, did I say it was nice?? #^

Unless you collect old kits for their appreciation value on e-bay, it is far better to get the plans and select your own wood. The old kits universally contained heavy wood, or inappropriate grain wood. NOTE: most cottage-industry kits nowadays pay attention to wood, so my comments don't apply to these.

Dennis,
That's why I put up the post. Anytime you see a Larry Richards kit that is original and complete, you will not be disappointed. Both the kits sold for fair prices, but could have easily gone higher because of their known quality. I'd say you got a deal. y1

Yes Wayne, it is your fault I won this kit!!! LL~When I read your post and looked at the kit, there were five minutes left so I sat and waited and added 1 buck at the 9 second mark...I didn't really expect to win you see LL~
I hope with a little practice I'll be able to cut half as nice a plane HB~>

You know Doc, it kind of "irks" me when other people try to decide what something should be worth to another person. Why should it bother you if it is worth more to someone else than it is to you? You have no idea what it is about the item that creates its value in another person's mind. I don't use Ebay, but if I did & decided that I had to have an item for whatever reason & am willing to pay whatever it takes then who are you to decide that I overpaid for it? You might want to put your comment in context such as: "It still irks me when I see smething go for way more than what it is really worth to me".

Thanks, I guess I am not too good with words at times.

EBAY is the age old adage of "one mans trash may be another mans treasure". However, there is nothing trashy about a Larry Richards kit! Especially when you score one for less then $70!!!!

To be fair there are really no bad kits today. This is not to pick a favorite kit maker but we are really in a golden age of kits .the old stuff might have been plentiful, but most of them was not worth having.. Walt, John, Larry, Eric, and Mike have absolutely spoiled us with the huge amount of quality choices that are available to us.
I keep telling everyone to enjoy it while you can and support these business as much as you can afford. All things in life are transitory and Larry has already retired. we cannot count on this really fabulous stash of kits to continue forever.
I know that the true masters of the sport might sniff at the thought of using a kit but these guys are few in number . For most of us kits are a pleasent diversion and help us get more time to enjoy the last part of the hobby.i.e. flying.
